About George Orwell
● Eric Arthur Blair, better known by his pen name, George Orwell, was born
on June 25th, 1903 in Moithari, British India where his father was stationed.
● He was an English novelist and essayist, journalist and critic.
● His work is characterised by lucid prose, awareness of social injustice,
opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic
socialism.
● He is famous for his two novels - Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-
Four (1949)
● He died of tuberculosis on January 21, 1950 in London, at the age of 46.
● He used a realistic and factual language.
● He represented a vision of human fraternity and misery because of poverty
and deprivation.
● He supported ideals of justice and equality between people.
● He fought against any form of totalitarianism and violation of liberty.
● He addressed his readers to refuse tyranny in all its forms.
About Nineteen Eighty-Four
● One of the most significant novels of the 20th century which is still very
much read.
● The novel has been translated into more than 65 languages.
● It was published on 8 June, 1949.
● Orwell initially wanted to name the book “The Last Man in Europe”.
● It is a satire against the hierarchical societies.
● It is a dystopian novel based in Oceania (The American continents and the
British Isles).
● It is an allegory for communist societies around the world, such as Russia,
Germany etc.
● In the novel, the people of society have absolutely no rights and are
constantly being watched and punished.
