What Is Responsive Design?
2
Since the rise in popularity of smart phones and tablets over the past few
years, more and more people are now using these as their primary device
for accessing web sites, so your web site needs to be accessible and easy
to use across multiple devices not just a desktop or laptap. This is where
responsive code comes in.
Unlike the old separate mobile websites that were popular a 3 or 4 years
ago a responsive website is single website that is designed to give optimal
user experience across a wide range of devices, detecting screen size rather
than detecting what device you are using
In layman’s terms the web site content will resize and adjust to fit the
viewing environment, adjusting text size, images and navigation, no more
sideways scrolling or zooming in to read text or click links.
Responsive Web
Design (RWD)
A responsive website is
dynamically optimised
for your screen size,
no more struggling to
view text, find menu’s
or click on links and no
more customers lost to
the competition.
Responsive code is
forward compatible
The old mobile websites detected the device and displayed the alternative
mobile version, so as new devices came out onto the market web sites
needed constantly updating... Responsive sites work on screen size not
device detection so this isn’t an issue, your responsive web site will be
forward compatible with all new devices.
As the old detection scripts couldn’t detect screen just device (user agent) ,
people using large screen tablets who could quite easily view the full desktop
version were served the scaled down mobile version instead.
Main Benefits of RWD
3
Being accessible to more devices means more
visitors and more potential customers increasing
your sales and turnover.
Google will rank your website higher for being
compliant with their standards and will choose to
display responsive web sites over non responsive
web sites for searches initiated on mobiles and
tablets
Visitors are more likely to refer or share your website
with others knowing that it is user friendly and easy to
navigate even if they don’t even know what a responsive
website is.
Benefits for you
Quick loading on their mobile devices
Easy to navigate and find the correct content
Easier to contact you through ‘call to action’ buttons
Easier to make purchases or book your services
Easier to share your pages through social networks
a mobile
enhanced

by 36%
Benefits for visitors
No more sharing traffic between your
mobile and desktop web site“
Google’s Views

Since Google is the primary search engine to impress with your website, it is smart to follow what Google loves.
Google not only recommends Responsive Web Design (RWD) as the best way to target mobile and tablet users,
but also favours mobile-optimised sites when presenting results for searches made on a mobile device.
This is especially true when mobile users search for local services. It’s important to note more searches are
originated on mobile devices nowadays
If a mobile/tablet user lands on your website and is frustrated or doesn’t see what they are looking for, according
to Google’s Think Insights on Mobile, there’s a 61% chance they will leave and go to a different website. Data
shows a positive experience with your responsive website a user is 67% more likely to buy a product or use a
service.

Latest info
from Google
Google has finally confirmed what
marketing experts and webmasters
have been saying for the past 12
months, “Your website needs to be
responsive otherwise it will not get
a good index”
Google has in fact now started
messaging webmasters warning
them that their sites are not mobile/
tablet friendly and that this non-
compliance WILL effect their position
in searches.

New Responsive Website
5
Responsive web design (RWD) is simply a new
way of writing code so that the website can
detect screen size and display the web site in
the correct way, omit items meant for desktops
when viewing on a mobile and show mobile
enhanced content for mobile users.
When designers first started using this technique
a couple of years ago it was seen as a gimmick
but as the mobile/tablet market grew and grew it
became a standardised way of building websites
for many professional designers..
With Top Rank you will NOT be charged
extra for a responsive web site as every
new website we now build is responsive as
standard...
RWD is a new way of coding
not a premuim service
Prices

Responsive Upgrades
As professional coders who refraind from
using templates or open source software
our prices are fully bespoke just like our

an idea of what they would expect to pay.
Upgrade or New Site
Having a new responsive website can cost less
than you think and sometimes a responsive
upgrade is the simplest and cheapest way to
go. If you are happy with your content, images
and branding then in most cases an upgrade
to responsive code is possible, even if your
website is database driven.
However, In some cases the website is either too
old to successfully upgrade or the client (web
site owner) feels that a re-brand is needed or
wishes to add more pages and features. In these
case a new website is usually built from scratch..
Brochure Sites 3 to 4 Pages from £300
Ecommerce Sites from £800
Dynamic Websites with CMS (Content
Management System)
from £400
RWD Question and Misconceptions
6
Responsive web design is still a fairly new technology so there are still a
few myths and misconceptions surrounding it.
RWD is still a fairly new
technology...
A responsive website is the same as a separate mobile website
Wrong: A responsive website is a single site that detects screen size, a
mobile website is a separate website that detects the device. Separate
mobile websites are old flawed, technology
My website already works on a mobile so it’s responsive
Wrong: Smartphones will render your website whether its responsive
of not, if you site isn’t responsive it will look the same as on a desktop
but smaller, you’ll need to scroll and zoom to read text and click links
and the whole experience is hard work and not very user friendly..
I don’t need to be responsive I’m on Google and my site is popular
Wrong: You may be on Google at the moment but guidelines are changing
and Google is already choosing to show responsive website to people
searching via a mobile/tablet.
However it’s not just Google you need to worry about.. More people are
using mobiles to access the internet, If your site is not user friendly to
these people they will go to a website that is.
