The human heart is situated slightly tilted towards the left inside the thoracic cavity, just behind the sternum. It is cone-shaped and around the size of a fist. The heart is covered by a double-layered membrane called the pericardium. Pericardial fluid is located between the pericardial membranes and acts to reduce friction between the membranes as the heart beats.
