The Krka River is located in Croatia and flows into the Adriatic Sea near the city of Šibenik. It is located within a National Park known for its waterfalls. Next to the iconic Skradinski Buk waterfall is the Hydroelectric Power Plant Krka, the first alternating current power system in Europe. Built in 1895, it was the second oldest hydroelectric power plant in the world and was constructed based on Nikola Tesla's design for utilizing alternating current. The plant originally provided power for the 340 street lights in Šibenik, making it the first city powered by a polyphasic alternating current system. Due to its historical significance, the former plant is now protected as an industrial architecture monument undergoing restoration.
