Integers in the Real World
We can drive OVER the speed limit (+15km/hr)
or UNDER the speed limit (-10km/hr).
Both of these can cause traffic problems.
• We can be OVERWEIGHT (+ 10kg), or we
might have an eating disorder and be
  UNDERWEIGHT (-25kg).
• Each golf hole has a “Par” or amount of shots
it should take to get the ball in.

• UNDER PAR is negative and Good 

• OVER PAR is positive, (meaning it took you
more shots than “par” and is not so good).
  (Continued next Slide)
Integers and Golf
• Here are some innovative ideas to make it
easier to achieve “Par” on the Golf Course.
Each week a
given Song can
move UP the
charts gaining
places (Positive),
OR
drop DOWN in
the charts falling
places (Negative).
There are indexes for the markets to indicate
how shares have gone that day.
(All Ordinaries, The Dow Jones, The Nikei).
Index can go UP (positive), or DOWN (negative).
Positive and Negative charges from atoms
make Batteries generate electricity for us.
Positive and Negative charges from atoms are
also used for electroplating silver onto spoons
and jewellery.
Downloading data onto our computer ADDS
data to our disc (positive), while Upload
sharing to others sends data out (negative).
Thrust power (positive) pushes a rocket upwards
  against earth’s gravitational force (negative).
Floors above ground level are positive, while the
underground car park levels are negative.

Burj Kalifa - World’s tallest building.
Level 124 = observation lounge, total height 160 stories.

The positive force of a drag racing car at full speed
is far too big to be overcome by normal braking.
It is like an integer sum of 1000 and -300.
There is still 700 of forward force to cancel out
before the car can reach zero and stop moving.
To create enough Negative braking force for the
drag racer to stop, parachutes are needed as
well as huge powerful disc brakes.
                        Negative Braking Force

                             Positive Force
When a plane takes of it is ASCENDING above
ground level (Positive), and when it comes in
to land it is DESCENDING (Negative).
Brakes supply a Negative direction pull against
the forward motion of the truck and its load.
The trailer brakes need to re-adjust to balance
each trailer load against the truck’s brakes.

               Forward Motion of Truck

              Trailer Brakes Truck Brakes
If the truck brakes too hard compared to the
trailer, then we get the classic jack-knife type
   truck accident occurring.
For an initial $20 invested on a Gaming Machine,
you might be $5 up (Positive), or more likely
down $15 and losing (Negative).
You can be racing at under world record time,
(Negative), or be outside of the world record
time (Positive).
Mt Everest 8.8km above sea level (Positive) and
the Mariana Trench is 10.9km below (Negative).
At the summit of Mt Everest, the Oxygen
availability is below (Negative) the required
level for human survival.
Getting Paid and Savings are Positive,
Loans and Debts are Negative money amounts.
• Increases are Positive, and Decreases Negative.
Drug Tests can be Positive, meaning you do have
the drug in your system, or Negative.
Integers and Blood Pressure
Your Blood Pressure might be too high (Positive),
but it can also be too low (Negative).
Feeling Positive ?
Hopefully learning a bit more about Integers in
the real world will make you feel even more
POSITIVE about Mathematics.
