Numerical Data Representation
 Two ways of numerical data representation:
 Analog
 Digital
 Discussed on first lecture
Systems
 Two types of system:
 Analog system: An analog system is a combination of
devices which are designed to manipulate logical
information that are represented in a analog form
 Digital system: A digital system is combination of devices
which are designed to manipulate logical information that
are represented in a digital form
Advantages of Digital Systems
 Digital systems are easier to design: As the circuits are mainly
switching circuits, where exact values of voltage or current in
not important. But only the range( HIGH or LOW) in which a
specific voltage falls is important.
 Information storage is easy
 Accuracy and precisions are greater: Digital systems can handle
as many digits of precisions as you need simply by adding more
switching circuits. In Analog system precision is limited to only
three or four digits.
 Operation can be programmed: digital system operations can
be programmed more easily as the variety and complexity of
the problem is limited compared to analog system operations.
Advantages of Digital Systems
 Digital circuits are less affected by noise: As the exact value of
voltage or current is not so important here, therefore these
systems are less affected by noise
 Smaller in size compared to the analog circuits.
Limitation of Digital Systems
The world is analog
Then how to take the advantages
of digital techniques
How to
1. Convert the real world analog inputs to digital
forms
2. Process or perform operation of digital
information
3. Convert the digital output back to the real
world analog form
Example of temperature control
system
