Jews have lived in Spain since 300 BC, with a rich but persecuted history. Under Visigoth rule in the 7th century, Jews were forced to convert to Christianity and faced imprisonment if they continued Jewish practices privately. However, Jews lived more harmoniously under Muslim rule in Spain during the 8th century. Eventually, the Catholic Monarchs' edict of expulsion in 1492 forced Jews to flee Spain or convert, marking the end of Jewish life there for centuries.
