The Sign of Jonah examined
The Scripture
 Matthew 12:39, 40 But he answered and said unto
them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after
a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the
sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days
and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son
of man be three days and three nights in the heart of
the earth.
 Mark 9:31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto
them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of
men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed,
he shall rise the third day.

 Genesis 6:14-17 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms

without with pitch. And this is the fashion which thou shalt
make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred
cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty
cubits. A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit
shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou
set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories
shalt thou make it. And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of
waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the
breath of life, from under heaven; and everything that is in
the earth shall die.

Editor's Notes

  • #4 Thus in prophetic symbols it shows the chosen people of God being transported
  • #5 Bearing these prophetic symbols in mind we can delve into the book of Jonah to see how it prefigured Christ’s life and closing scenes
  • #7 The nation of Israel at the time of Christ’s coming could correctly be referred to as the vessel. They were the depositories of the law The religion of the Pharisees had become a religion of hypocrisy they had refused to practice the truths that had been given to them and instead became bigots.
  • #8 Note here that it is Jonah who gives the permission to be cast out of the ship.
  • #9 The persecutions around the time of Christ are well known from history.
  • #10 Take careful note of who was doing the persecution around the time of Christ’s birth according to Matthew
  • #11 It was through willing surrender that Christ was led to His crucifixion
  • #12 This of course is the greatest challenge to most scholars to outline and explain how three days and three nights come as they often interpret the phrase “heart of the earth” Matt. 12:40, to mean the grave.
  • #13 Let us note a few things before we look at how Jesus fulfilled this parallel The little horn hear mentioned must have fought directly against the Saviour This identifies the power as Rome
  • #15 We thus have the length of time and need only the details to be filled in. According to prophetic interpretation it then means this prophecy of 70 weeks is really 490 years.
  • #18 Hence the 483 years ends not at the birth of the Messiah but on the day when He was anointed. The normal method of anointing is by use of oil. By looking closely at zechariah 4 we recognize that oil in prophecy symbolises the Holy Spirit. Hence the anointing of Christ would be when He was baptized and the Holy Spirit descended as a dove upon Him.
  • #19 The 70 week prophecy now meets up with the Jonah prophecy in a remarkable manner at this point A careful study of all the accounts of Jesus’ death reveal only three consecutive days. This effectively eliminates a Wednesday crucifixion as Christ was risen on the first day of the week according to consistent biblical record.
  • #20 Jesus the substance of the shadows or types which pointed to his sacrificial death on the cross. Paul also mentions (second point) This reveals that Christs sacrifice was once for all occurrence
  • #23 Thus we recognize that it was the nation of Israel that would bring forth the man child who was threatened
  • #26 The hour of darkness according to the words of Christ started in the night when he was betrayed.
  • #27 Note that from Exodus 12 we recognize that the Passover was eaten during the Night. Leviticus 23:5 also reveal that the Passover should be taken at even. Look closely again at the text in Exodus 12; when was the first born smitten? This also prefigured the fact that that Jesus would be smitten during the night as well.
  • #30 Establishing the faith of our brethren on the word of God.
