FreeNAS 8.0 is a major redesign of the FreeNAS open source network attached storage (NAS) system. The redesign focused on creating a modular system with a small footprint that supports plugins. Key changes in FreeNAS 8.0 include using NanoBSD as the operating system, separating the OS from storage volumes, requiring at least 1GB of disk space, and moving to a modular design with some features implemented via plugins. The redesigned graphical interface is now tree-based instead of using drop-down menus.
