Other major cities include Kaunas, the former capital, and Klaipėda on the Baltic Sea. Lithuania has a population of over 3.5 million people and was formerly part of the Soviet Union before gaining independence in 1990 and joining NATO and the EU in 2004. The country has a democratic government and a primarily Lithuanian-speaking population, along with significant Russian and Polish minorities.
