Lithuania is a country in Central Europe bordering Latvia, Belarus, Poland and Russia. The capital and largest city is Vilnius, which was founded in the 13th century. Other major cities include Kaunas, the former capital, and Klaipėda on the Baltic Sea. Lithuania has a population of over 3.5 million people and was formerly part of the Soviet Union before gaining independence in 1990 and joining NATO and the EU in 2004. The country has a democratic government and a primarily Lithuanian-speaking population, along with significant Russian and Polish minorities.
