SURF’s Edubadges service is the platform for digital certificates, including microcredentials, for the Dutch education sector. With an edubadge, you give learners a lifelong proof of the knowledge and skills they have acquired.
The Edubadge service plays a pivotal role in empowering Dutch higher education institutions with a secure and innovative platform for digital credentialing. Designed to recognize and verify achievements, competencies, and skills, the Edubadge service uses the Open Badges standard which has been tailored with additional metadata extensions to allign with the European Educational standards described and widely agreed upon in the Bologna Declaration. These extensions enable a shift toward more transparent, interoperable, and trustworthy digital credential system greatly supporting student mobility across Europe.
Micro-credentials pilots for lifelong learning
We have set up micro-credentials pilots based on a quality framework that clearly and succinctly specifies the following:
• What do we mean by a micro-credential?
• How do we ensure quality?
• How do we agree on the descriptions on the certificate and thus on the issued edubadges?
Changing identity and credentialing landscape
The landscape of digital identity and credentialing is undergoing a significant transformation with the advent of new technological developments such as with digital identity wallets, and new standards, such as Open Badges V3 and Verifiable Credentials, all often gathered under the umbrella term “Self Sovereign Identity” (SSI). SSI promises that individuals become sole sovereign over their identity data. Hence, individuals can decide with which party their data is shared. It is often claimed that this improves security of the identity data and the privacy of the individual. This presentation explores the implications of these innovations for the Open Badges community, particularly in the context of the upcoming Open Badges V3 standard. Additionally, we examine the opportunities presented by these changes for the development and adoption of Edubadges, an open-source initiative that aims to support the implementation of Open Badges V3.
Interoperability: Scaling Credentialing Models
Interoperability is a cornerstone for the scalability and adoption of digital credentials across institutions and borders. To address this, the Edubadge service must prioritize alignment with international standards and seamless integration with existing systems. Key strategies include:
• Adoption of Open Standards
• Integration with Digital Wallets
• Institutional Collaboration
• API and System Integration
By prioritizing interoperability, SURF can position Edubadges as a scalable and universally accepted solution for digital credentialing, benefiting institutions, learners, and employers alike.
