Where Most of Us Start - Substitution • Perfectly normal to start at the “Substitution” level of tech use • Take existing activities and add a tech tool • Examples – Turn paper worksheets into digital worksheets – Reading text digitally via online textbook or Internet – Online flash cards, quizzes

Next level of growth - Augmentation • Moving from tools that substitute for paper to ones that have some functional improvement. • Examples – digital content is opened in app like Adobe Reader so that student can mark up text; highlight; define words; take notes – Students complete a short formative assessment using app like Google forms, Socrative or Nearpod. Teacher uses responses to create flexible groups.

Where we want to end up • Focus on student-creation apps. • Examples: – Use iMovie to retell story or create digital book report – Use app like iBooks Author or Book Creator to create media rich ePub books – Use an online collaborative space (schoology group, shared google doc, wiki) to write in small groups, conduct peer editing, and to comment on final products. – Create a multimedia lesson, using app such as ShowMe, to explain the steps of solving a problem.

- 27. #7- Use the iPad as an expensive mini- whiteboard. Install a drawing app such as the free Doodle Buddy, Educreations or Showme. Students can then use the iPad to draw their answers to questions as they would on a mini-whiteboard. Educreations and Showme allow video and narration too. - 28. #8 Create mind maps to aid revision or plan projects. Use Popplet Lite or iBrainstorm - Mind- mapping tools that help students think and learn visually. Students can capture facts, thoughts, and images and learn to create relationships between them.
- 29. #9: Keep Your Notes: Evernote Evernote – great notetaking and research tool. Evernote allows you to keep notes and Internet clippings/sources in an online account that you can access anywhere. This app organizes notes, web content, and sources in one place. You can even write your rough draft in the same folder that houses all of your research. Find out more here. - 34. #14: Keep records on student behavior or assess progress Use Class Dojo to customize or create forms that can be used to track all kinds of behavior data on your students. ClassDojo replaces classroom management tools and behavior trackers like gold-star charts with positive feedback and parent communication. Records can be exported in a variety of formats.

- 36. #16 – iBooks Author / Book Creator These apps are great for students to make their own eBooks and save them. They can be used for creative writing or as a digital portfolio over a period of time (quarter, semester) to contain notes of important concepts and sample problems/drawings. It becomes a quick reference guide for students. Can add text, pictures, video and simulations in iBooksAuthor and everything except video in Story Buddy Lite. Note: Book Creator Free saves only 1 story. iBooksAuthor must be created in computer lab – not available yet as an app.

- #7: TPACK and the ISTE standards are fantastic tools for providing teachers both the standards and the framework for integrating technology. However, teachers need the “theory” reduced to a more practical level….examples of how to do this given the ever changing technological landscape they operate in. The best part about TPACK is the “operational extension” of it developed by Professors at the College of William and Mary . They worked with teachers and instructional technology leaders to develop “TPACK Learning Activity Types”. There is a Learning Activity Type for each subject area. They can be used by teachers during the planning process to link specific technologies with particular learning activites. - #9: We all start with adaptation – but realize the need to move on once you have a comfort level. After all using ipads for just quizzes and notes is an expensive way to administer way to accomplish those routine tasks. The ipads can do much more than that.

- #15: Note that the substitution bubble is the largest, yet still does not outweigh the redefinition bubble. This is meant to demonstrate that while you may create 10, 20 even 30 lessons on the substitution level, their sum effect on your students&apos; learning can still be less than that of 1 lesson on the redefinition level.
