Marsh Creek - Teaching with iPads
Teaching with iPads
• 1:1 iPad program is changing the way we teach
and students learn.
• Today’s teachers need to expand their
knowledge of how to teach in a technology
enhanced learning environment.
• The goal of this lesson is to provide you with
insight on how to do that.
ISTE Standards for Teachers
1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences
3. Model digital age work and learning
4. Promote and model digital citizenship and
responsibility
5. Engage in professional growth and leadership
SAMR LEVELS
Levels of Use
TPACK – a planning tool
TPACK ACTIVITY TYPES
SAMR Wheel
Where Most of Us Start -
Substitution
• Perfectly normal to start at the “Substitution”
level of tech use
• Take existing activities and add a tech tool
• Examples
– Turn paper worksheets into digital worksheets
– Reading text digitally via online textbook or Internet
– Online flash cards, quizzes
Next level of growth - Augmentation
• Moving from tools that substitute for paper to
ones that have some functional improvement.
• Examples
– digital content is opened in app like Adobe Reader so
that student can mark up text; highlight; define
words; take notes
– Students complete a short formative assessment using
app like Google forms, Socrative or Nearpod.
Teacher uses responses to create flexible groups.
Where we want to end up
• Focus on student-creation apps.
• Examples:
– Use iMovie to retell story or create digital book report
– Use app like iBooks Author or Book Creator to create
media rich ePub books
– Use an online collaborative space (schoology group,
shared google doc, wiki) to write in small groups, conduct
peer editing, and to comment on final products.
– Create a multimedia lesson, using app such as ShowMe,
to explain the steps of solving a problem.

using a simple pen tool with
adjustable tip size. Add text/color.
•Drawings are vector-based and lines
are automatically smoothed out.
#3 - Presentations
The iPad is perfect for instant
presentations in the class

#4 - Use apps for Formative Assessments/Exit
Tickets
To redefine assessment and
differentiation, use apps such as
– Google Forms
– Socrative
– Nearpod
to create a faster feedback
loop. These sites utilize color
coding, instantaneous
feedback, and automatic
student feedback to allow you
to enact same-day
differentiation
#5
Dragon Dictation allows iPad
users to quickly and easily
convert speech into editable
text that can be copied or sent
via e-mail.
Great for learners who prefer
talking over writing. Improves
spelling too.
iTunes Link
http://is.gd/dYf7M
#6 - Practice math skills using Math…
Your teacher app.
- Includes units of study by
grade level
- Very thorough table of
contents- provides instant
feedback to student.
#7- Use the iPad as an expensive mini-
whiteboard.
Install a drawing app such as
the free Doodle Buddy,
Educreations or Showme.
Students can then use the iPad
to draw their answers to
questions as they would on a
mini-whiteboard.
Educreations and Showme
allow video and narration too.
Can search archive of teacher created
Videos for differentiation
#8 Create mind maps to aid revision or
plan projects.
Use Popplet Lite or

images and learn to create
relationships between them.
#9: Keep Your Notes: Evernote
Evernote – great notetaking
and research tool.
Evernote allows you to keep notes and
Internet clippings/sources in an online
account that you can access anywhere.

and sources in one place. You can even
write your rough draft in the same folder
that houses all of your research. Find out
more here.
Also a great tool for sharing
kids writing on the iPad.
And it connects directly with Schoology.
#10 Free copies of interactive texts-
ibooks
Search the many free
interactive books using
iBooks.
Open existing online
textbooks or pdf docs in
Adobe Reader
Both apps allow students to
annotate text; highlight,
comment, take notes, etc.
iBooks
Adobe Reader
#11: Navigate your world : Google Earth

Looks great and works great
on the iPad.
It's a great way to:
•Brief students about a
fieldtrip

than app
• https://www.google.com/
maps/d/
#13: Simulation type apps – Human
body – Digestive system

Great way for students to learn the parts
of various body systems by connecting
the various organs correctly. Free apps
– Know your Body App
– Build a Body App
#14: Keep records on student behavior
or assess progress
Use Class Dojo to customize or create forms that can be used
to track all kinds of behavior data on your students. ClassDojo
replaces classroom management tools and behavior trackers
like gold-star charts with positive feedback and parent
communication.
Records can be exported in a variety
of formats.

and sample problems/drawings. It becomes a
quick reference guide for students.
Can add text, pictures, video and simulations in
iBooksAuthor and everything except video in
Story Buddy Lite.
Note: Book Creator Free saves only 1 story. iBooksAuthor must be
created in computer lab – not available yet as an app.
#17 - Create and Collaborate on Google
Docs
Now that Google allows mobile
editing of Google Docs files from
mobile devices, student class
collaboration can stay portable.

Editor's Notes

 • #4: http://www.iste.org/docs/pdfs/20-14_ISTE_Standards-T_PDF.pdf Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources Collaborate with students, peers, idits to using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation. YOU DESERVE ALL THE SUPPORT AND HELP WE CAN PROVIDE.
 • #7: TPACK and the ISTE standards are fantastic tools for providing teachers both the standards and the framework for integrating technology. However, teachers need the “theory” reduced to a more practical level….examples of how to do this given the ever changing technological landscape they operate in. The best part about TPACK is the “operational extension” of it developed by Professors at the College of William and Mary . They worked with teachers and instructional technology leaders to develop “TPACK Learning Activity Types”. There is a Learning Activity Type for each subject area. They can be used by teachers during the planning process to link specific technologies with particular learning activites. Check it out http://activitytypes.wmwikis.net/
 • #9: We all start with adaptation – but realize the need to move on once you have a comfort level. After all using ipads for just quizzes and notes is an expensive way to administer way to accomplish those routine tasks. The ipads can do much more than that.
 • #11: Use apps that allow students to create rather than just consume content.
 • #15: Note that the substitution bubble is the largest, yet still does not outweigh the redefinition bubble. This is meant to demonstrate that while you may create 10, 20 even 30 lessons on the substitution level, their sum effect on your students' learning can still be less than that of 1 lesson on the redefinition level.
 • #18: Breaking Down to Rebuild: Redefining the Innovative Classroom Our mindsets and philosophy about the purpose of technology in your classroom also should be considered This process is very unsettling- which is why we were so stressed the first half of the year….and continue to wonder if we are ever going to make it to the end of the year. . It is frightening to be risking not only your comfort, but your students' success on something you've never tried. But I want to commend you on the strides you’ve made and pledge our ongoing support and ask you to Consider what redefining your classrooms will mean to the students who learn in them.
 • #21: Group share – share one thing with people at your table or with whole class.
 • #23: Watch this video of Squeeze on a US late night talk show to see a keyboardist playing the iPad! http://www.tuaw.com/2010/07/16/squeeze-keyboardist-uses-ipad-on-fallon-appearance/ click on duette to set one side as treble and one as bass so 2 kids can play
