Rivers in their middle course have a less steep gradient, causing the river to meander as it flows. The fast flowing water on the outside of bends erodes the sides of the river, deepening and widening the bends over time. This erosion of the outside of bends is what causes the meandering pattern to form in the middle course of a river.
