Editor's Notes

  • #3: Many of today’s learners are visual
  • #4: Yes, your students do get bored with the traditional lecture
  • #5: Catching the attention of the Sesame Street Generation
  • #6: One way to capture their eye is to link to popular media
  • #7: Many types of media to work with today
  • #8: The trick is to link popular media to educational content.
  • #9: So lets segway into some examples shall we?
  • #11: Imagine the problems that can arise from the following scenario.
  • #13: Much of what we do as teachers is use metaphors. Some of these metaphors are even found in popular music.
  • #14: Much of what remote sensing is all about can be found in this youtube video of the Moody Blues song The Word
  • #15: We can even use popular media to examine puzzles.
  • #16: Here we see part of the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind…. And the cartographer correctly identifies the numbers as geographic coordinates.
  • #17: Here we see the players identify the coordinates as Devils Tower and are trying to find ways to scare people away so they won’t interfere with their operations concerning the alien landing. There is a problem, however….
  • #18: The problem is that the coordinates, if placed in Google Earth, lead you to an area of center pivot irrigation in Colorado rather than Devil’s Tower which is in Wyoming.
  • #19: You can use popular media to pose some interesting questions. Here in an episode of Bones Sealy Booth is explaining how a criminal can be found by the intersection of two activity spaces. Temperance Brennan sees this as a spatial venn diagram. GIS people like me call this a Union Based Overlay.
  • #21: Even case studies can be developed. Could you develop a case study for GIS analysis based on this fictitious problem based on the TV series Bones?
  • #23: Even the fluidity of terminology can be examined using popular media.
