Pteridophytes undergo a two-stage life cycle of sporophyte and gametophyte generations. The sporophyte produces spores through sporangia clustered in sori on fertile fronds. When spores germinate they grow into heart-shaped gametophytes that produce egg and sperm cells. Fertilization occurs when sperm swim down the neck of archegonia to fertilize eggs, forming zygotes that will grow into new sporophyte plants.
