What is Micro-blogging? A form of blogging that allows users to write brief text updates and publish them publically, through social media sites, or privately, through instant messaging, text messaging or email.
Characteristics of a Micro-Blog 140 characters or less Can be submitted through a variety of media, including: Text or instant messages E-mail MP3 Social networks
History of Micro-Blogging Microblogging arrived in March 2007 at a conference in Austin, Texas when Twitter was first introduced. Twitter was invented by Evan Williams and created a new power to short messaging. Influences of microblogging: Instant Relay Chat (Windows Messenger, AIM and Gchat), chat status messages, and mobile phones. IRC used “a rich language of protocols” that is now used in microblogging platforms, such as #namespace and @username. Cartoonist Robert Crumb predicted Twitter in the 1960’s. (source: Christopher Herot
History of Micro-Blogging Evolved from personalized away messages on IM, to social network status updates as on Facebook. This integration of real-time communication became a way of cultural behavior, and people started to express themselves through short messages. SMS (short message service) on cell-phones was first available to use in 1999, allowing a maximum message length of 140 characters. All these previous short messaging services were combined in to a short message service platform: know as Twitter. As of November 2007, Twitter served 593,645 public accounts and gained over 1000 members daily. According to Nielson.com, as of March 2009 Twitter had a monthly growth of 1,382 percent, with 6 million unique monthly visitors.
