Drop Cap – The drop cap is In place to allow the reader to know
where the article begins, this creates ease for the reader, and the
easier the magazine is to read the more it will attract to an
audience. The drop cap is in a serif font as it matches with the
rest of the font in the by line, showing formality which is
expected by the older target audience.
Main Image – The main image takes up a whole page of this double page spread as it varies the
type of media quite well as just writing would not be aesthetically pleasing to the audience. It is
a medium long shot as it shows clothes, background, facial expression, body language and props.
The smart apparel suggest that this person is an indie artist and the cool expression represents
the stereotypical indie approach of not caring. The picture is black and white, this could suggest
that this is an old picture of the model which fits with the article as it is about his whole career
over many years. The fact he is holding a guitar shows evidentially that this is a music magazine;
the big picture may also attract an audience as it is common for people to cut out pages like this
for collections etc.
Main Text – The main text is in sans serif font and under bold captions, this makes
the article much more segmented and easier to read. It is written in black to stick
with the colour scheme and stand out on the white page, the use of BOW (black
on white) is to create ease for the reader as it is very clear to read. The main text
is written in columns so the reader can identify that it is a magazine. The sans serif
font is to show a slight informality in this style of music, this is indie rock that
implies smart but not formal.
Pull Quote – The pull quote is in red as it allows the
reader to have a snippet of what the main article will
be like. It is positioned at the end of the article as it is
not the most important thing on the page however it is
written in red which suggests it should be read first
over the main article. This is proven as the colour red
connotes importance for example stop signs. It is
written in serif font to match the other conventions of
the double page spread, this once again makes the
article seem more formal for the elder audience.
Certain parts of the pull quote are written in bold,
these are parts of the pull quote that stand out on
their own. The whole reason the pull quote is there is
to draw the attention of the reader and give them an
insight on the article.
Colour Scheme – The colour scheme of red, white and
black matches that of the front cover and contents
page. This creates a sense of cohesion making the
magazine seem more professional. It also gives the
magazine a sense of movement as each page matches
the other sticking with basic clear colours.
Page number/Magazine Name – The page number is
located in the bottom left of the magazine as this is the
conventional place for it and is the least important part
of the magazine so should be out of the way. It is their
to create ease for reader when using the contents
page. The magazine name, so in this case ‘MOJO’ is
there to enforce that idea of branding as the more it is
seen the more it will be remembered which creates a
customer loyalty which could lead to more copies
being sold
