My Product Analysis - Audience Theory


Following Graeme Burton’s theory, that audiences are either
socially grouped or media grouped, my target audience is female
teenagers and young women who are European/American in the
middle class (socially grouped) who are make-up lovers and music
lovers. (Media grouped)

Hartley takes this idea further, by breaking down media grouped
audiences in to seven categories. Self: The aspirations of my
audience include looking beautiful, feeling amazing, being a little
bit more popular and being creative with what they wear. Gender:
My target audience is female teenagers and young women.
Feminine qualities that I included are colourful, sensitive, beautiful,
sweet, loving and kind. Age group: I want to appeal to female
teenagers and young women; therefore my product needs to imply
safety, beauty, cuteness, specialty and nice features that won’t be
embarrassing or not safe. Nation: My target audience is European
and Americans, which are both western continents, so my advert
includes influence on the western media values and their common
ideals.

Richard Dyer states that people are not satisfied with their lives
and therefore the media can persuade them by offering solutions
to their inadequacies. The inadequacy that my target audience
might have could fall under the categories of jealousy (seeing
women who look better than them) and confusion. (They’re not
quite sure what to wear and they don’t know how to wear things)
My product could therefore offer the following solutions: advice,
beauty, attention and love.
