What did you find? Similarities? Differences?
Canis Familiaris Each picture we saw was a different type of dog Dogs all belong to the same genus and species: Canis Familiaris How did these varieties originate?
Canis familiaris Selective breeding by humans! Take a look at the following pictures and tell me what you notice.

What did we learn? What was different about the second set of pictures from the first set?
Change over Time Observations of change in domesticated animals and plants helped people recognize that species can change over time Charles Darwin gathered a lot of evidence and was the first person to publish his findings on the subject.
The Theory of Evolution First proposed by Lucretius. 1800 years before Darwin! Darwin (English Scientist) was the first person to describe the mechanism in which evolution works That process is known as Natural Selection
Charles Darwin
Darwin’s Voyage Darwin before publishing his book titled: On the Origin of Species traveled on the ship the HMS Beagle. While traveling, he studied all kinds of plants and fossils He visited the Galapagos Islands
Darwin’s Findings During his trip, Darwin discovered that many plants and animals on the galapagos islands resembled those of the nearby coast of South America. He suggested that the birds migrated from the Galapagos Islands (near Ecuador) to South America He noticed that the birds had undergone a change since they have been seperated and called this change “descent with modification”
Evolution by Natural Selection Darwin was influenced by a guy named Thomas Malthus, who said that populations are able to increase faster than food supply Darwin realized this theory applies to all species Every organism has the potential to produce many offspring during it’s lifetime. In most cases only a limited number survive to reproduce
Evolution by Natural Selection Darwin took it one step further to come up with the the idea of Natural Selection Natural Selection : Individuals that have physical or behavioral traits that better suit their environment are more likely to survive and will reproduce more successfully than those who do not have such traits
Evolution by Natural Selection In time, the number of individuals that carry favorable characteristics that are also inherited will increase in population. And thus the nature of the population will change- a process called evolution
