8 Simple Rules for
Navigating Notes
Learning Goals:
• Restate 8 rules for navigating notes
• Compare to know and to do information
• Use abbreviations for efficient note-taking
Step 1: Supplies needed!
Why?
• Within 48 hours of listening to a lecture or hearing someone speak,
your brain will filter and forget 50% of the information…meaning
you don’t remember what was said!
• Writing down key points and important ideas and then reviewing
them later will increase your ability to remember the information!

How?
• No matter the method you choose, you must always write the
date and topic (class & lesson).
• Keep your method simple & consistent
1.Pair up-Shoulder Partner
2.Quickly decide which partner
goes 1st.
3.After the 1st partner shares
one thing, partner 2 shares
one thing; repeat.
4.You “Rally” the topic like this
until the chime sounds.

Why is it important to take notes? And how can I do it?
Get yourself ready…
Keep it simple & consistent

Editor's Notes

  • #2: You’ve heard it before but it’s worth repeating…In high school and college, content (the stuff you are supposed to learn) gets more difficult. Classes move faster and teachers’ expectations increase. Lectures are longer and packed with information you must remember. To succeed in high school and college, you’ll need to take notes in class. There are many benefits: Notes help you stay focused and attentive Notes create a kind of journal of what your teacher wants you to know and do. Notes make a reliable study guide for any subject The act of writing something down improves your ability to remember it, especially for visual and KT learners Notes can be used to activate your schema
  • #3: Buy one spiral notebook for all your classes (except math). You should always have a separate binder with paper for notes for math. As soon as you enter the class, pull out your notebook and pencil and highlighter.
  • #5: Kagan Structure Teach & Model Rally Robin (2 minutes) Have students pair up, work with table partner to rally robin Why is it important to take notes? And how can I do it?
  • #6: Students get their pencils and I will model and write key words, phrases, approaches, as I teach the lesson. Students must be actively listening and have paper/pencil
  • #7: Taking notes in class is a struggle for many students. They can’t decide what to write down or they write down too much or too little. Some students can’t decipher their handwriting later, and many don’t know how to use their notes to study. Be patient and keep at it.
  • #8: SLANT to actively listen. Make eye contact, get out a pencil and open your notebook. Listen for two different, but equally important kinds of information: what your teacher wants you to do and what your teacher wants you to know.
  • #9: Don’t only rely on Google Classroom. When your teacher is reminding you of “To Do” items, write them down in your notes. If it has to do with weekly homework, make the changes immediately in your planner. Sometimes you don’t listen as carefully to “To DO” information because there is no test on it. But if you’ve ever lost points on an assignment because you handed it in late or failed to follow your teacher’s instructions, you know that ”To do” information is important. It usually comes at the beginning and end of a class. Your teacher may verbally tell you the information, or write it on the board. It includes: Changes or additions to HW assignments Due Date reminders Assignment turn-in directions Test/quizzes details Deadlines for anything
  • #10: Teachers are usually obvious about what they think is important—after all, they want you to learn! They may repeat a point or say something like “The most important points are…” or “You will be responsible for knowing this...” If key words or phrases are written on the board or on a PPT, Copy them down!
  • #13: Don’t stress about spelling or grammar when taking notes.
  • #16: You are not limited to words when you take notes. Draw any tables, charts, diagrams you are provided.
  • #18: Record – 1st step Reduce – key points and summarize into your own words Recite – saying them out loud helps youretain information Reflect – how does this help me understand what I’m learning? Review – at home, review the notes again
