Why I think HTML5 is the watershed event for mobile learning Bill Zobrist Product Strategy Pearson The Talk Rejected Title
Why is HTML5 a Good Thing?
increasingly mobile - changing how we interact with the web We create content We share We continue to search for answers We watch a lot of video We burn through a lot of apps
Change in Internet Use by Age
Growth of mobile categories
Killer App or Kill the App? Do we need another 100K apps? Only 5% of people use a free app 30 days after its been downloaded Not the answer
For education, we need build once - play everywhere. HTML5 can give us that (eventually)
For the good of mobile learning - Flash may need to die Really, Flash will have its place for a long time to come
We need a great web experience - no matter how we decide to access it
we have a problem: Your browser dictates your view of the web
Standards give an expected experience

Highlights No plug-ins! Offline Data Drag & Drop Geolocation Semantic Tags Canvas History
Video - No Plug-in! (but some headaches)
Offline data storage
Drag and Drop
Geolocation
Canvas for rich interactions Look Ma, no Flash!
The History API The illusion of “back” Loads only new part of page No page refresh = big performance upside!
HTML5 to Education Video with no plugins…it just works! Offline data storage … assessments? Drag & Drop - activities Geolocation - checking, but not Facebook? Canvas … rich interactions History … performance
