NURSING EDUCATION:
Nursing education is the professional education for the preparation of nurses to enable them
to render professional nursing care to people of all ages, in all phases of health and illness, in a
variety of settings.
3. NURSING PROGRAM
Nursing educational program may be defined as in large part that influencing of one group of human
beings, the pupils to grow towards defined objectives; utilizing a second group of human beings, the
teacher as agents, and operating in a setting of third group of human being, the public variously
concerned both with objectives and with means used to achieve them.

5. A BRIEF HISTORY OF NURSING EDUCATION
Nursing Education Worldwide (Global):
European Schools of Nursing :- Early nurses did not receive formal training specifically designed to
prepare them to care for the sick. program was founded in 1859 to prepare lay women to care for sick
in their homes. The theory consisted of an hour class held daily for five months, for a total of 120
hours. The students studied anatomy, physiology, hygiene, pathology, and nursing procedures.
At the completion of program, the student was given an oral examination. The students wore no
uniforms and were not called nurses.
6. The Nightingale School for Nurses: (1853-1856) London
The Nightingale School is considered the first "modern" school of nursing and the beginning of
nursing as an organized profession. The program was one year in length. Evaluation and testing was
done by the school matron. St. Thomas hospital was selected for the clinical learning experiences. The
purpose of the school was to train moment as hospital and district health nurses.
7. Early Nursing Education in United States:
During the first part of nineteenth century, the only organized preparation of nurses was in catholic
sisterhoods, training was apprenticeship and restricted to members of the order.
EARLY PROGRAM:
Three schools-Bellevue Hospital training school in New York, Massachusetts, hospital training school
in Boston, and the Connecticut training school in new heaven were opened in America during 1873.
The schools greatly influenced the development of nursing education.
8. Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing:1873
The nightingale system was followed in New York; it was called the Bellevue system. The training
program was one year in length, but students were required to remain a second year doing service. Duties
in the second year included private duty nursing in the patient home and nursing homes . In 1873, the
school pass first nursing manual.
9. Massachusetts General Hospital
The training school of the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston was opened on November 1
1873 with a class of six students. Because this was the first school to attempt a formalized
instructional program. It is recognized as one of the research schools in nursing education.
10. MILITARY NURSING
It is the earliest type and 1664 the East India Company helped to start a hospital for soldiers at Fort.
St. George, Madras. In 1797 a lying hospital was built and 1854 government sanctioned training
School for midwives. In 1861 through the (efforts of civilian hospitals) reform in military hospital led
to reform in civilian hospitals. This laid foundation for Public Health Nursing.
11. CIVILIAN HOSPITALS
Nursing in the Military hospital was of poor quality carried on by male orderliness and the menial
staff (unskilled). In 1871 the Governmental General Hospital, Madras, undertook a plan to train
nurses. Nurses were brought from England to be in charge and the first six students were those who
had previously received their diploma in midwifery.
12. MISSION HOSPITALS
Mission hospitals were the first to begin the training of Indian as nurses. In the beginning there was
no uniformity of course or educational requirements. About 1907-1910 the North India United
Board of Examiners for Mission Hospital was organized and set up rules for admissions and
standards of training and conducted a public examination. On 24th may 1909 the Indian Medical
Mission Association granted the nursing Diploma after examining student by Central Board of
Nurses training schools in South India.

15. NON-UNIVERSITY NURSING PROGRAM
Certificate course:
Α.Ν.Μ. The ANM training was for 2 year starts in 1977. There are about 500 school in India this
course in present.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
The age for admission shall be 17 - 35 years.
The minimum educational requirements shall be 10 +2 in Arts passing out from recognized board.
Student shall be medically fit.
16. COMPETENCIES
• Provide skilled midwifery services to all mothers in the community and refer mothers at risk to
Hospitals.
• Provide skilled care to all neonates in community and refer neonates at risk to the appropriate
levels.
• Render skilled child care services at home, clinic, and school.
• Guide/train birth attendants, Anganwadi workers, other community health activists and volunteers.
17. NON-UNIVERSITY NURSING PROGRAM
DIPLOMA
G.N.M.
The GNM course is conduced in more than 1000 centers in country. The latest revision of the GNM
by
the INC in 1988 had reduced duration of the course from 3.6 year to 3 year on the passing the
Candidates are registered as a nurse (RN) and as midwives (RM) by the state nursing councils.
18. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Minimum and maximum age for admission will be 17 and 35 years.
Minimum education: 10+2 class passed preferably Science & English with aggregate of 40%
marks or 10+2 in arts passing out from recognized board under AISSCE/CBSE/ICSE/CHSE or
other equivalent board.
Student shall be medically fit.

20. DEGREE PROGRAM
B.sc . NURSING
Graduate nursing started in India in the year 1946 in CMC, Vellore and in the RAK college of new Delhi
university.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on 31st December of the year in which admission is
sought.
Minimum education 10+2 passed with science & English core/English elective with aggregate of 45%
mark from recognized board under AISSCE/CBSE/ICSE/CHSE or other equivalent board.
Student shall be medically fit.

22. DEGREE PROGRAM
POST BASIC B. Sc (N)
A two-year degree course in nursing is offered in several universities in India. The entry requirement is
that they should have completed the GNM. Most places also ask for 1 year after completed the GNM.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
• Passed the higher secondary or senior secondary or intermediate or 10+2 or an equivalent
examination recognized by the university for this purpose.
• Obtained a certificate in GNM and registered as R.N.R.M. with the state nurse’s registration council.
• Candidates shall be medically fit.

POST BASIC DIPLOMA COURSES
This has provided an opening for diploma nursing all over the country to undertake higher education
by IGNOU in 1994.
These courses are designed for higher studies in chosen specialties. Normally, the duration is 1 year.
Candidates who had successfully completed there GNM/B.Sc. Nursing programs can apply. In some
institutes it's mandatory to complete 2 years of work experience to attain eligibility for the course.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
M.sc(N) course is presently being offered in several universities in the country. The first college of M.sc
nursing was RAK college of nursing in 1969.
The candidate should be a registered nurse and registered midwife of equivalent with any state
nursing registration council.
• The minimum education requirement is B. Sc,nursing, post basic. BSc nursing with 55%aggregate
marks.
•Minimum one year of work experience after basic b. sc. Nursing and post basic BSc nursing.
27. COMPETENCIES

28. MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY PROGRAMME IN NURSING
•The duration of the full-time M.Phil. program will be one year and the part time will be two years

disciplines. In the 1980 RAK college of nursing.
