“For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever
loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.”

 Jesusproclaimed a specific gospel
 message that is magnificent in
meaning, effervescent in effect, grand in
scale, convicting in impact, liberating in
 purpose, and penetrating in revelation.

 The gospel themes

 The gospel timeline
 “8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead,
descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for which I am
suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal.
But God's word is not chained.” 2 Timothy 2:8-9 (NIV84)
 “1 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I
preached to you, which you received and on which you have
taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold
firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have
believed in vain. 3 For what I received I passed on to you as
of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to
the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on
the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he
appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve.” 1 Corinthians
    15:1-5 (NIV84)
 It’s about Jesus
     • “The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God” (Mk 1:1).
 It’s about the kingdom
     • “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a
testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Mt 24:14).
 It’s about God’s grace
     • “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race
and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me–the task of testifying to the
gospel of God’s grace” (Acts 20:24).
 It’s about the glory of Christ
     • “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot
see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Cor
       4:4).
 It’s about salvation
     • “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the
gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal,
the promised Holy Spirit…” (Eph 1:13).
 It’s about peace
     • “…and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of
       peace” (Eph 6:15).
 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary
and burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn
from me, for I am gentle and humble in
heart, and you will find rest for your
souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my
 burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-29
 17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to
him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is
written: 18 "The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me to preach good
news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim
freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight
for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to
proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." 20 Then
he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the
attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in
the synagogue were fastened on him, 21 and he
began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is
fulfilled in your hearing." Luke 4:17-21 (NIV84)
 Matthew 5:17 “Do not think that I have
 come to abolish the Law or the Prophets;
I have not come to abolish them but to
 fulfill them.”

 Matthew 8:17 This was to fulfill what was
spoken through the prophet Isaiah: “He
took up our infirmities and carried our
 diseases.”
 Matthew 26:28 This is my blood of the covenant,
which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of
    sins.
 Acts 5:31 God exalted him to his own right hand as
Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and
    forgiveness of sins to Israel.
 Acts 10:43 All the prophets testify about him that
everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness
    of sins through his name."
 Acts 13:38 "Therefore, my brothers, I want you to
know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is
    proclaimed to you.
 The
gospel was preached in the Garden of
 Eden (Genesis 3)

 Thegospel was preached through the story
of Cain and Abel (Genesis 4; Hebrews 11)

 Thegospel was preached to the Israelites
 (Hebrews 4)

 Thegospel was prepared by the prophets
 (Mark 1; Isaiah; Jeremiah; Job)
 Jesus
      was crucified because of the
 gospel.

 Apostle Paul left his Phariseeism and was
willing to die for the gospel.

 Stephen was stoned for preaching the
 gospel.
 The gospel is Jesus, descended from David, who died for
our sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, was raised
from the dead and appeared to Peter, and then to the
    Twelve.

 The gospel message is peace, grace, salvation, the glory of
Christ and the kingdom of God. Are there others?

 The gospel themes are rest, fulfillment, freedom and
    forgiveness. Are there more?

 The gospel has been preached from the beginning,
expressed more and more clearly as history passes.
 “I have seen people brought to tears by the forgiveness of
God, who came to the altar in surrender, and who shared
there the struggles that had brought them to the church and
to the altar. Instead of being welcomed, they were told how
terrible their sin was. The accuser had his theology straight
but lacked love. The point of the Gospel is forgiveness, not
condemnation. It is out of the soil of forgiveness that holiness
grows, not out of the venom of condemnation.”
