CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
The circulatory system is a combination of vessels and
organs that are used to transport blood and nutrients
throughout an organism
CONCEPTS
ARTERY :small tunnel that allows blood with oxygen in to
pass around body from the heart
VEINS :small tube that allows blood without oxygen to pass
around body to heart
 CAPILLARY: tiny networks of blood vessels connecting
arteries and veins
 BLOOD VESSELS: a tubular structure carrying blood through
the tissues and organs; a vein, artery, or capillary.
CLOSED CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
• Organisms come is all
different shapes and sizes
and also have different types
of circulatory systems.
Animals can have either a
closed system or an open
system.
• Referred to as closed because
the blood in the system flows
within a complex network of
vessels or tubes, that are all
HOW WORKS
The blood is pumped by a heart throughout the body in a
continuous circuit of different types of vessels. a closed
circulatory system creates higher pressure in the blood vessels,
organisms with this type of circulatory system are able to grow
larger because the body can push blood greater distances

and back to the heart.
EXAMPLES HUMANS – VERTEBRATES -- FEW INVERTEBATES
OPEN CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
• Hemolymp is seen in animals that have this circulatory system this
system consists of blood vessels plus open space ,this systems are
less complex than closed , open circulatory system pump blood into
a hemocoel with the blood difusing back to the circulatory system
between cells also .
• HEMOCOEL:cavity that holds hemolymp fluid
• HEMOLIYMP:a fluid in the body cavities and tissues of invertebrates, i
n arthropods functioning as blood and in some other
invertebrates functioning as lymph
HOW WORKS
1. In most molluscs and arthropods the
heart pumps hemolymph via vessels
into tissue spaces that are sometimes
enlarged into sackline tissues and
eventually hemolimph drains back to
the heart
2. In the grasshopper ,an arthropod the
dorsal tubular heart pumps
hemolymph into a dorsal aorta,which
empties into hemocoel ,when heart
contracts ,openings called ostia are
closed ,when heart relaxes ,the
hemolymp is sucked backinto the
heart in way of ostia and the

DIFFERENCES
CLOSED OPEN
Organs are not in direct contact of blood Organs come in direct contact with
blood
Blood flow can be regulated and the pressure is
hight
Blood flow cannot be regulated and the
pressure is low
Blood flows through closed spaces and have
capillaries
Blood flows through open spaces and don’t
have capillaries
The material transport by the blood arrives to
the tissues through diffusion
Blood pumped by heart travels to the blood
vessels and irrigate directly to cells returning
then by different mechanisms
Animals only have 1 heart Animals can have 1 heart or 2
oxygenated blood can reach the extremities of
the body much faster than with an open system
Less energy
organisms with a closed system can metabolize
much faster, because it allows them to move,
digest and eliminate waste much more quickly
Oxygenated blood takes more time to reach the
extremities of the body, the open system is
only feasible in smaller animals
CONCLUSIONS
• Vertebrates and Invertebrates possess one of two types of
circulatory systems. Namely, open circulatory system and
closed circulatory system.
• Open circulatory system is primarily found in invertebrates.
Here, the blood flows freely through cavities and there is no
vessels to conduct the blood.
• Closed circulatory system, on the other hand is found in
vertebrates and a few invertebrates like earthworms. This
system has the presence of vessels that conduct blood
throughout the body.
