Testing the Basic Feasible Solution for Optimal Solution
Modified Distribution Method (MODI)
After getting the initial solution, the next step is to determine whether this solution is the best or least cost solution.
For this we use modified distribution method (MODI) also called (u,v) method. This method helps in comparing the
relative advantage of alternative allocations for all unoccupied cells simultaneously. We see that the number of
positive allocations is equal to the number of rows+columns-1 (m+n-1) or not.
If the number of allocations is less than (m+n-1), the solution is said to be degenerated solution, which is to be solved
later on. If he number of positive allocations is equal to (m+n-1), we try to find better solution of the problem by MODI
method.
TEST FOR OPTIMALITY: MODI METHOD
This method consists of the following steps:
Step 1: For an initial basic feasible solution with m+n-1 occupied cells, calculate ui, and vj for rows and columns. The
initial solution can be obtained by any of the three methods discussed earlier.
To start with, any one of ui's or yj's is assigned the value zero. It is better to assign zero for a particular ui or vj where
there are maximum number of allocations in a row or column respectively, as it will reduce arithmetic work
considerably. Then complete the calculation of ui's and vj's for other rows and columns by using the relation cij = ui+vj
for all occupied cells
Step 2: For unoccupied cells, calculate opportunity cost by using the relationship dij=cij-(ui+vj)
Step 3: Examine sign of each dij. Signs of the values in the cell evaluation matrix indicate whether optimal solution has
been obtained or not. The signs have the following significance:
a) A positive value in an unoccupied cell indicates that a poorer solution will result by allocating units to the cell, , i.e.
if dij>0, the current basic feasible solution is optimal.
b) A zero value in an unoccupied cell indicates that another solution of the same total value can be obtained by
allocating units to this cell, , i.e. if dij=0, the current basic feasible remain unaffected but an alternative solution
exists.
c) A negative value in an unoccupied cell indicates that a better solution can be obtained by allocating units to this
cell, i.e. if dij< 0, then an improved solution can be obtained.
Step 4: Construct a closed path (or loop) for the unoccupied cell with largest negative opportunity cost. Start the
closed path with the selected unoccupied cell and mark a plus sign (+) in this cell, trace a path along the rows (or
columns) to an occupied cell, mark the corner with minus sign (-) and continue down the column (or row) to an

occupied cell and mark the corner with plus sign (+) and minus sign (-) alternatively, Close the path back to the
selected unoccupied cell.
Step 5: Select the smallest quantity amongst the cells marked with minus sign on the comers of closed loop Allocate
this value to the selected unoccupied cell and add it to other occupied cells marked with plus signs and subtract it from
the occupied cells marked with minus signs.
Step 6: Obtain a new improved solution by allocating units to the unoccupied cell according to Step 5 and calculate the
new total transportation cost.
Step 7: Test the revised solution further for optimality. The procedure terminates when all dij≥0 for unoccupied cells.

Step-II: Introduce dual variables
Introduce dual variables corresponding to the supply and demand constraints. If there are m origins (supply) and n
destinations (demands), there will be m+n dual variables let ui (i=1,2,….m) and vj (j=1,2,….,n) be the dual variables
corresponding to supply and demand constraints. Variables ui and vj are such that ui+vj=cij, for occupied cells.

Step-V: Signs of the values in the cell evaluation matrix indicate whether optimal solution has been
obtained or not.
In the present example since two cell evaluations are negative, it is possible to obtain a better
solution by making these cells as basic cells.
Sub-Step-1:
From the cell evaluation matrix, identify the cell with the most negative cell evaluation.
This is the rate by which total transportation cost can be reduced if one unit is allocated to this cell.
In case of tie in the cell evaluation, the cell wherein maximum allocation can be made is selected.
This cell is now called the identified cell
