has been chosen as this year’s World Food Day
theme to shed some light on this trend and
what can be done to mitigate its impact on the
most vulnerable.
On World Food Day 2011, let us look seriously
at what causes swings in food prices, and do
what needs to be done to reduce their impact
on the weakest members of global society.
Research and Presentation by: TARIQ SARWAR AWAN
HUNGER

 Hunger is exclusion – exclusion from the land,
from income, jobs, wages, life and citizenship.
When a person gets to the point of not having
anything to eat, it is because all the rest has
been denied. This is a modern form of exile. It is
 death in life…(Josue de Castro)

 Of the 925 million people suffering from chronic
hunger, 98 % live in the Developing World.
Hunger, poverty and food prices are inter linked.
Not every poor person is hungry, but almost all
hungry people are poor.

Research and Presentation by: TARIQ SARWAR AWAN
FOOD SECURITY (definitions)
“Ensuring that all people at all times have both
physical and economic access to the basic food that
they need”.
                          or
“Access of all people at all times to enough food for
an active, healthy life”.
                          HENCE

“Food security [is] a situation that exists when all
people, at all times, have physical, social and
economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious
food that meets their dietary needs and food
preferences for an active and healthy life”.

Research and Presentation by: TARIQ SARWAR AWAN
 With an estimated increase of 105 million
hungry people in the year 2009, there are
  now 1.02 billion malnourished individual
across the world. almost one sixth of entire
  human race suffering from hunger.
 Poverty and hunger are interlinked
recent report from the Finization manifests
that there are more than 1 billion people
around the world who suffer from hunger
  everyday

Research and Presentation by: TARIQ SARWAR AWAN
 This report is not only alarming but also
disheartening to think that while some of us
waste food on the table, a big number of people
have not a single chunk of food on their plate.

 Of the 925 million people suffering from chronic
hunger, 98% of the affected are from developing
    world.

 Not every poor person is hungry, but almost all
    hungry people are poor.

COMPONENTS OF FOOD SECURITY

1.Food availability

2.Access to food

3.Food utilization or absorption

4.Equity of food distribution

Research and Presentation by: TARIQ SARWAR AWAN
 Land and water are important natural resources for
mankind. The demand for food, fiber, and shelter is
increasing with the continuous increase in the world
    population.

 More than 90% of rice and 43% of wheat in the
world is produced and consumed in Asia.

 new varieties and chemical fertilizers, during the
green revolution of the 1960s, resulted in increase
    in crop yields.

Research and Presentation by: TARIQ SARWAR AWAN
 Agriculture in Pakistan is irrigated with 82 percent of
cultivated area. During the last 46 years, the area
with irrigation facilities increased from 8.21 to 18.0
million hactares, at an average annual rate of 1.7
    percent.
 Most of the increase is in canal and tube well
    irrigation.

 About 14.57 million ha is presently served by Indus
River irrigation system, this canal irrigation system is
the largest integrated irrigation network in the world.

Research and Presentation by: TARIQ SARWAR AWAN
 It has 3 major reservoirs, 19 barrages,12 inter-river
link canals, 43 independent irrigation canal
commands and some 58,500 km of main canal.

 Agriculture is considered the mainstay of Pakistan’s
economy. According to the Economic Survey of
Pakistan 2001-2002, nearly one-fourth of total
output of the GDP and 44 per cent of total
    employment is generated in agriculture.

 67% of Pakistan rural population is employed for
    Agriculture for their living.

THE ECONOMY AND AGRICULTURAL PERFORMANCE

Pakistan is low-income developing country
with a per capita income of US$ 443. The country
has made significant progress in about 65 years
since independence in 1947, when it was a
predominantly agricultural economy. The economy
has been considerably diversified since 1947.e.g.
Wheat production fluctuated between 14.56 million
tons in 1990-91 to 21.5 m.tons in 2005-06. and
almost doubled in present.

EVOLUTION OF ECONOMY IN PAKISTAN

 The Evolution may be led in 6 Periods:

 PERIOD 1: 1947 - 1958

 PERIOD 2: 1958 - 1971

 PERIOD 3: 1971 - 1977

 PERIOD 4: 1977 – 1988

 PERIOD 5: 1989 – 1999

 PERIOD 6: Till to date
Research and Presentation by: TARIQ SARWAR AWAN
 Average annual growth in real gross domestic
 product (GDP)Decreased considerably (from 6.1
percent in the 80s) to 4.6 percent in the 90s

mainly due to poor performance of the
 manufacturing, services and agriculture sectors,

so the growth of Agriculture and production is

very important for growth and food security.
