Juan Maldonado reflects on trips through two Puerto Rican forests with the RISE program. [1] He developed a greater appreciation for the natural beauty of the island and pride in being able to explore it without traveling far. [2] The guidance from professors helped him understand the diversity and unity of the flora, and how each plant has unique characteristics that help it survive the heat and humidity. [3] The trips concluded with scenic views from a mountain tower overlooking the island and a sunny beach where the group bonded like a family enjoying the outdoors.
