Life Sketch
 Born: August 9, 1896, Switzerland
 Died: September 16,1980 (Age 84)
 Parents: Eldest son of Arthur Piaget
and Rebecca Jackson.
 Education: Received Ph.D. from University of
Neuchatel in 1918.
 Wife: Married to Valentine Chatenay
in 1923
 Children: 3 children namely Jacqueline,
Lucienne and Laurent whose
intellectual development from infancy
to language was studied by Piaget.
Piaget in brief
 Jean Piaget (1896-1980) most influential researchers in the
area of developmental psychology.
 He was originally trained in the areas of biology and
philosophy and considered as "Genetic Epistemologist".
 Piaget's theory is based on the idea that the developing
child builds cognitive structures.
 At the age of 11 published a paper on Albino sparrow
Cont…
 He believes that the child's cognitive structure increases with
the development.
 Piaget's Theory of infant development were based on his
observations of his own three children.
1. COGNITIVE STRUCTURE:
Schema:
Cognitive function
Cont…
Mental state:
 Assimilation: Old learning to new
 Accommodation : New learning/new ways of thinking
Assimilation
Accommodation
Equilibration
Stages of cognitive development
Cognitive development occurs in four stages
 SENSORY MOTOR(0- 2 yr.)
 PRE- OPERATIONAL (3- 7 yr.)
I. Pre-conceptual (3-4 yr.)
II. Intuitive (5- 7 yr.)
 CONCRETE OPERATIONAL (8- 11 yr.)
 FORMAL OPERATIONAL (12- 15 yr)
SENSORY MOTOR(0- 2 yr.)
 Uncoordinated reflexes such as sucking, looking
reaching and grasping.
 Next 4 months uncoordinated reflexes to coordinated
schema (try to put everything in mouth, stares, grasp
etc.)
 Nothing exist beyond his eye
 By 8 months realize that, object having permanent
existence(hiding toy inside the blanket ,the infant try
to lift the blanket )
 Formation of mental images , language ,motor
exploration.
PRE- OPERATIONAL (3- 7 yr.)
I. Pre-conceptual (3-4 yr.)
 Identify object by name
 Concept formation is difficult(all men= Papa & all
female= mama)
 Neither inductive nor deductive rather transductive
reasoning. (Ex: 1 Ten rupee coin is < 10 one rupees
coins)
 Creative play & animism (too imaginative)
 Egocentrism: Sun and moon are following him,
(breaking the biscuit is less then a full one)
II. Intuitive (5- 7 yr.)
 Formation of various concepts
 Not fully logical thinking but through intuitively
 Absence of reversibility(moving from A- B is not same
as from B-A, cotton and iron) and conservation
CONCRETE OPERATIONAL(8- 11 yr.)
 Children begin to think logically about concrete events
 They begin to understand the concept of conservation;
that the amount of liquid in a short, wide cup is equal to
that in a tall, skinny glass, for example
 Their thinking becomes more logical and organized, but
still very concrete
 Children begin using inductive logic, or reasoning from
specific information to a general principle
FORMAL OPERATIONAL (12- 15 yr)
 At this stage, the adolescent or young adult begins to
think abstractly and reason about hypothetical problems
 Abstract thought emerges
 Teens begin to think more about moral, philosophical,
ethical, social, and political issues that require theoretical
and abstract reasoning
 Begin to use deductive logic, or reasoning from a general
principle to specific information
