PRAYER WITH FASTING,
AND THE FASTED LIFESTYLE
RECALLING THE GLORY OF THE
FIRST (“old”) COVENANT:
EXODUS 19:10 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto
the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and
let them wash their clothes,
11 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the
LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon
mount Sinai.
12 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round
about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not
up into the mount, or touch the border of it:
whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to
death:
13 There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be
stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall
not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come
up to the mount.
14 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people,
and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.
15 And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third

16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that
there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud
upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding
loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.
17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to
meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the
mount.
18 AND MOUNT SINAI WAS ALTOGETHER ON A SMOKE,
BECAUSE THE LORD DESCENDED UPON IT IN FIRE: AND
THE SMOKE THEREOF ASCENDED AS THE SMOKE OF A
FURNACE, AND THE WHOLE MOUNT QUAKED GREATLY.
19 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and
waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God
answered him by a voice.
20 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the
top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to
the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

WHAT IS THE POINT OF ALL
THESE?
1. THE GLORY OF THE LORD WHICH WAS
REVEALED WHEN THE LAW WAS GIVEN
WAS VERY REAL – a burnt mountain still
stands today; how much more will the glory be
of the new covenant of grace? HOW REAL
CAN THE MANIFESTATION OF THE GLORY
BE?
2. The wilderness beneath the mountain of
Sinai is absolutely barren; YET, THE LORD
SUSTAINED ISRAEL (AT THAT TIME AT
LEAST TWO MILLION PEOPLE) FOR FORTY
YEARS!
How much more able is God able to sustain us
today???
NOW WE GO TO THE GREAT
SUBJECT MATTER OF
PRAYER
The disciples asked Jesus to
teach them to pray (Luke 11:1-13)
1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place.
When he finished, one of his disciples said to
him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John
taught his disciples.” 2 He said to them,
“When you pray, say: “‘Father, hallowed be your
name, your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day
our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we
also forgive everyone who sins against us. And
lead us not into temptation.’
Luke 11
 5 Then he said to them, “Suppose one of you has
a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and
says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6
because a friend of mine on a journey has come
to me, and I have nothing to set before him.’ 7
“Then the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me.
The door is already locked, and my children are
with me in bed. I can’t get up and give you
anything.’ 8 I tell you, though he will not get up
and give him the bread because he is his friend,
yet because of the man’s boldness he will get up
and give him as much as he needs.
Luke 11
 “9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you;
seek and you will find; knock and the door will be
opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks
receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who
knocks, the door will be opened. 11 “Which of
you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give
him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg,
will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though
you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your
children, how much more will your Father in
heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask
him!” Luke 11:1-13
THIS WAS A REVOLUTIONARY
TEACHING FOR THREE
REASONS:
FIRST, the Jews NEVER PRAYED TO
GOD AS THEIR FATHER;
God was the “God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob”
but never “the Father…” THEY CANNOT EVEN
PRONOUNCE THE NAME OF GOD!! Now Jesus
is telling them to call God THEIR FATHER!!
- Jesus was telling them that those who believe in
Jesus have become the sons (children) of God
(John 1:12), and therefore, God has also become
their Father
- That the prayer of the Christian is towards God AS
THEIR FATHER (OUR – FATHER)
- And because God is OUR LOVING HEAVENLY
FATHER, all we need is ask, seek and find, and we
will receive, and find and the door will be opened to
us
SECOND REASON (why this was a
revolutionary teaching):
JESUS TAUGHT THAT THE MAIN THING
ABOUT PRAYER IS the HOLY
SPIRIT, AND THAT YOU CAN ASK
THE FATHER TO GIVE YOU THE
HOLY SPIRIT:
“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish,
will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for
an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then,
though you are evil, know how to give good gifts
to your children, how much more will your
Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those
who ask him!” Luke 11:1-13
BECAUSE OF THIS
REVOLUTIONARY TEACHING:
1. PRAYER HAS BEEN MADE SIMPLE
2. PRAYER HAS BEEN MADE AN ISSUE OF
RELATIONSHIP WITH THE HEAVENLY
FATHER, AND NOT OF RELIGION
3. PRAYER IS A DELIGHT, NOT A DUTY
4. PRAYER, IN A VERY REAL SENSE, HAS
BECOME VERY, VERY EASY, JUST LIKE
TALKING TO YOUR LOVING HEAVENLY
FATHER.
5. UNDERSTANDING THE WORK OF, AND
WORKING WITH, THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS
BECOME VERY CRUCIAL IN A VIBRANT
PRAYER LIFE (“PRAY IN THE SPIRIT”…)
There is a THIRD REASON: The Lord’s
Prayer is a COMPLETE OUTLINE of
LIFE
1. Our Father – GOD’S PATERNITY (Who is our father? Paternity -
identity)
2. Who art in Heaven – GOD’S PLACE (Where do we belong?
citizenship)
3. Hallowed be Thy Name – GOD’S PRAISE (What do we seek?)
4. Thy Kingdom come – GOD’S PROGRAM (What is our
involvement?)
5. Thy will be done… – GOD’S PRIORITY (What is important, truly
matters?)
6. Give us this day our daily bread – GOD’S PROVISION (Who is
our security for our needs?)
7. And forgive us our trespasses – GOD’S PARDON (Have we
found freedom?)
8. As we forgive those who trespass against us – GOD’S PRE-
REQUISITE (Have we released others who have hurt us? MICAH
– WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE?)
9. And lead us not into temptation – GOD’S PATH (How do we

IS IT NECESSARY?
WILL IT NOT COMPLICATE

LET US SEE HOW CHRIST
HIMSELF PRAYED (Hebrews 5)
5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the
glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him,
“You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.”[a]
6 And he says in another place,
“You are a priest forever,
in the order of Melchizedek.”[b]
7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up
prayers and petitions with fervent cries and
tears to the one who could save him from death, and
he was heard because of his reverent
submission. 8 Son though he was, he learned
obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once
made perfect, he became the source of eternal
salvation for all who obey him 10 and was
designated by God to be high priest in the order of
Melchizedek.

 4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected
by humans but chosen by Godand precious to
him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being
built into a spiritual house[a] to be a holy
priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal
priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special
possession, that you may declare the praises of
him who called you out of darkness into his
wonderful light.
LET US, THEREFORE, DISTINGUISH
THE PRAYER OF A SON/DAUGHTER to
the Father, FROM THE
SON/DAUGHTER ACTING AS
INTERCESSOR before a Holy God
 WHEN WE PRESENT TO GOD OUR
NEEDS, WE COME TO HIM AS A FATHER,
AND PRAYER IS SIMPLE, SPONTANEOUS,
FREE, EASY…
 BUT WHEN WE STAND IN THE GAP FOR
OTHERS, WHEN WE PRAY FOR OTHERS,
FOR THE NATION, THIS IS NOW
INTERCESSION, AND WE STAND
BETWEEN GOD AND MAN AS GOD’S
THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
PRAYER AND INTERCESSION: I
Timothy 2
 2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions,
prayers, intercession and thanksgiving
be made for all people— 2 for kings and
all those in authority, that we may live
peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and
holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God
our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be
saved and to come to a knowledge of the
truth. 5 For there is one God and one
mediator between God and mankind, the

WHEN PEOPLE PRAY ALL NIGHT, IN TEARS,
TRAVAILING IN INTERCESSION, ARE THEY MAKING
PRAYER “COMPLICATED”?
Is this what we call “pudag-pudag”?
Colossians 1: 3-14
 For this reason, since the day we heard about you,
we have not stopped praying for you and asking
God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through
all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray
this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord
and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in
every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,
being strengthened with all power according to his
glorious might so that you may have great endurance
and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father,
who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of
the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued

delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

them cover themselves with their own confusion, as
with a mantle.
30 I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; yea, I
will praise him among the multitude.
31 For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to
save him from those that condemn his soul.
7. WHEN A PROPHETIC WORD OF
JUDGMENT WITH HOPE IS TO BE
ANNOUNCED TO THE PEOPLE
JEREMIAH 36:1 And it came to pass in the fourth
year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah,
that this word came unto Jeremiah from the
LORD, saying,
2 Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all
the words that I have spoken unto thee against
Israel, and against Judah, and against all the
nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the
days of Josiah, even unto this day.
3 3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the
evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may
return every man from his evil way; that I may
forgive their iniquity and their sin.
4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah: and
Jeremiah 36
5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am shut
up; I cannot go into the house of the LORD:
6 Therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which
thou hast written from my mouth, the words of the
LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD'S
house upon the fasting day: and also thou shalt
read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of
their cities.
7 It may be they will present their supplication before
the LORD, and will return every one from his evil way:
for great is the anger and the fury that the LORD hath
pronounced against this people.
8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that
Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the
Types of fast:
1. EXTREME FAST – no food, no water
Moses in the entire Bible – 40 days, and another 40
days
Elijah (I Kings 19:4-8) – 40 days
Esther (Esther 4:15-17) – 3 days 3 nights
Paul – 3 days (Acts 9:9)
2. NORMAL FAST – no food, only water
Jesus (Mat. 4:1,2)
3. PARTIAL FAST (DANIEL FAST) – NO CHOICE FOOD,
WINE, only vegetables and fruits

FASTING
 Description
 The principle of fasting is simple. When the intake of food
is temporarily stopped, many systems of the body are
given a break from the hard work of digestion. The
extra energy gives the body the chance to heal and
restore itself, and burning stored calories gets rid of
toxic substances stored in the body.
 The digestive tract is the part of the body most exposed to
environmental threats, including bacteria, viruses,
parasites, and toxins. It requires the most immune system
support. When food is broken down in the intestines, it
travels through the blood to the liver, the largest organ of
the body's natural detoxification system. The liver breaks
down and removes the toxic by-products produced by
digestion, including natural ones and the chemicals now
present in the food supply. During fasting, the liver and
immune system are essentially freed to detoxify and
heal other parts of the body.

fasting:
 Fasting can be used for nearly every chronic
condition, including allergies, anxiety , arthritis,
asthma, depression , diabetes, headaches, heart
disease , high cholesterol , low blood sugar,
digestive disorders, mental illness, and obesity .
Fasting is an effective and safe weight loss method. It
is frequently prescribed as a detoxification treatment
for those with conditions that may be influenced by
environmental factors, such as cancer and multiple
chemical sensitivity . Fasting has been used
successfully to help treat people who have been
exposed to high levels of toxic materials due to
accident or occupation. Fasting is thought to be
beneficial as a preventative measure to increase
overall health, vitality, and resistance to disease.

behind a blessing-- grain offerings and drink offerings

fast, call a sacred assembly.

  • 1. NIHOP January 2016 PRAYER WITH FASTING, AND THE FASTED LIFESTYLE
  • 2. RECALLING THE GLORY OF THE FIRST (“old”) COVENANT: EXODUS 19:10 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, 11 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. 12 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death: 13 There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount. 14 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third

Exodus 19 16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. 18 AND MOUNT SINAI WAS ALTOGETHER ON A SMOKE, BECAUSE THE LORD DESCENDED UPON IT IN FIRE: AND THE SMOKE THEREOF ASCENDED AS THE SMOKE OF A FURNACE, AND THE WHOLE MOUNT QUAKED GREATLY. 19 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. 20 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.

  • 11. WHAT IS THE POINT OF ALL THESE? 1. THE GLORY OF THE LORD WHICH WAS REVEALED WHEN THE LAW WAS GIVEN WAS VERY REAL – a burnt mountain still stands today; how much more will the glory be of the new covenant of grace? HOW REAL CAN THE MANIFESTATION OF THE GLORY BE? 2. The wilderness beneath the mountain of Sinai is absolutely barren; YET, THE LORD SUSTAINED ISRAEL (AT THAT TIME AT LEAST TWO MILLION PEOPLE) FOR FORTY YEARS! How much more able is God able to sustain us today???
  • 12. NOW WE GO TO THE GREAT SUBJECT MATTER OF PRAYER
  • 13. The disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray (Luke 11:1-13) 1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say: “‘Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’
  • 14. Luke 11  5 Then he said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, 6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.’ 7 “Then the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man’s boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

Luke 11  “9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:1-13
  • 16. THIS WAS A REVOLUTIONARY TEACHING FOR THREE REASONS: FIRST, the Jews NEVER PRAYED TO GOD AS THEIR FATHER; God was the “God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” but never “the Father…” THEY CANNOT EVEN PRONOUNCE THE NAME OF GOD!! Now Jesus is telling them to call God THEIR FATHER!! - Jesus was telling them that those who believe in Jesus have become the sons (children) of God (John 1:12), and therefore, God has also become their Father - That the prayer of the Christian is towards God AS THEIR FATHER (OUR – FATHER) - And because God is OUR LOVING HEAVENLY FATHER, all we need is ask, seek and find, and we will receive, and find and the door will be opened to us
  • 17. SECOND REASON (why this was a revolutionary teaching): JESUS TAUGHT THAT THE MAIN THING ABOUT PRAYER IS the HOLY SPIRIT, AND THAT YOU CAN ASK THE FATHER TO GIVE YOU THE HOLY SPIRIT: “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:1-13
  • 18. BECAUSE OF THIS REVOLUTIONARY TEACHING: 1. PRAYER HAS BEEN MADE SIMPLE 2. PRAYER HAS BEEN MADE AN ISSUE OF RELATIONSHIP WITH THE HEAVENLY FATHER, AND NOT OF RELIGION 3. PRAYER IS A DELIGHT, NOT A DUTY 4. PRAYER, IN A VERY REAL SENSE, HAS BECOME VERY, VERY EASY, JUST LIKE TALKING TO YOUR LOVING HEAVENLY FATHER. 5. UNDERSTANDING THE WORK OF, AND WORKING WITH, THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS BECOME VERY CRUCIAL IN A VIBRANT PRAYER LIFE (“PRAY IN THE SPIRIT”…)
  • 19. There is a THIRD REASON: The Lord’s Prayer is a COMPLETE OUTLINE of LIFE 1. Our Father – GOD’S PATERNITY (Who is our father? Paternity - identity) 2. Who art in Heaven – GOD’S PLACE (Where do we belong? citizenship) 3. Hallowed be Thy Name – GOD’S PRAISE (What do we seek?) 4. Thy Kingdom come – GOD’S PROGRAM (What is our involvement?) 5. Thy will be done… – GOD’S PRIORITY (What is important, truly matters?) 6. Give us this day our daily bread – GOD’S PROVISION (Who is our security for our needs?) 7. And forgive us our trespasses – GOD’S PARDON (Have we found freedom?) 8. As we forgive those who trespass against us – GOD’S PRE- REQUISITE (Have we released others who have hurt us? MICAH – WHAT DOES GOD REQUIRE?) 9. And lead us not into temptation – GOD’S PATH (How do we
  • 20. With these… PRAYER INDEED DOES SOUND SO SIMPLE AND EASY. WHAT THEN IS FASTING? IS IT NECESSARY? WILL IT NOT COMPLICATE THINGS? DO WE STILL NEED TO FAST IF GOD IS OUR LOVING HEAVENLY FATHER?
  • 21. LET US SEE HOW CHRIST HIMSELF PRAYED (Hebrews 5) 5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.”[a] 6 And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”[b] 7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

WE ARE ALSO PRIESTS: AND MUCH, IN FACT, MOST OF OUR PRAYERS COME FROM OUR ROYAL PRIESTHOOD (1 PETER 2)  4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by Godand precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house[a] to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
  • 23. LET US, THEREFORE, DISTINGUISH THE PRAYER OF A SON/DAUGHTER to the Father, FROM THE SON/DAUGHTER ACTING AS INTERCESSOR before a Holy God  WHEN WE PRESENT TO GOD OUR NEEDS, WE COME TO HIM AS A FATHER, AND PRAYER IS SIMPLE, SPONTANEOUS, FREE, EASY…  BUT WHEN WE STAND IN THE GAP FOR OTHERS, WHEN WE PRAY FOR OTHERS, FOR THE NATION, THIS IS NOW INTERCESSION, AND WE STAND BETWEEN GOD AND MAN AS GOD’S
