SUPERVISION
MEANING:-
The word supervision is derived from two words super means ‘above’ & video means ‘I see’. In
other words, overseeing (or) superintending the work of others as mentioned by adepoju 1998.
DEFINITIONS:-
1. It is defined as the authoritative direction of the work of one’s subordinates. It is based on their
hierarchal organization in which each level of subordinate to the one immediately above it and subject to its
orders.

2. Supervision is defined as a cooperative relationship between a leader and one or more persons to
accomplish a particular purpose.

3. Supervision is a kind of teaching which involves, advising, helping, inspiring leading and
liberating.
- Jean Barrett
4. Supervision refers to monitor the progress of routine work of one’s subordinates and guiding them
properly.
5. Supervision is guiding and directing the efforts of employees toward accomplish of organizational
goals.
Principles of Supervision:-
1. Ensuring High Qulity and Productivity
Translate the policies and objectives of the agency into specific work duties and timelines.
Good work should be recognized. This implies that the acknowledgment of any good work done
must be immediate and made public to others which will then serves as incentive to others.
2. Groups,Teams and Powerful Meetings
Supervision should provide full opportunity to do work in cooperation to develop the team spirit and
develop good interpersonal relationship.
3. Corporate Social Responsibility and Ethics
4. Manageing Diversity
5. Reaching Goals: Plans and Controls

Supervision should be well planned and adopted to good planning. It calls for good planning and
organization.
Select the jobs to be completed.
Assign workers who will complete the jobs.
Determine when the jobs will be completed.
Review whether or not the work is being completed and up to agency standards.
6. Organizing and Authority
7. The Supervisor as Leader
Supervision should always think herself as a learder so as to give guidance help and encouragement.
8. Problem Solvind,Decision Making and Creativity
9. Communication
10. Motivating Employees
Staff should be motivated and encouraged to work to increase thier productivity. They should be
encouraged to improve their ability to achieve organization goal.
11. Discipline
Assure that employees behave in a manner as though they accept them.
12. Managing Time and Stress
13. Managing Conflict and Change
Resolve conflict:
a. Between workers.
b. Between the agency and workers.
c. Between units within the agency.
The supervisor is the bridge between higher levels of administration and the worker.
14. Selecting Employees
Assure that employees behave in a manner as though they accept them.
Evaluate employees;
Educate workers on the goals and objectives of the agency;
15. Providing Staff Orientation and Training
Introduce new workers to the agency and help new workers find their place. The quality and quanity
of the work must be specified in clean and clear terms.Staff should be made to understand clearly
what to expect and what not to expect from them.new staff must be given the necessary orientation.

Staff should be offered necessary gidance. They should be guided on how to carry out the
assignment,standard should be set by the supervisor while information should be given ruling out the
possibility of rumors.
16. Appraising Performance
Act as liaison between various agencies sharing policy and solving problems in terms of such things
as client referral.
17. Constructive Criticism
Poor work done should be constructively criticized. Advice and personal relationship should be
given to the affected staff. It needs be stated here that such criticisms should be made private and
with mind free of bias.
18. Opportunity For Improvement.
Staff should be given opportunity to prove their worth and for aspiring higher. They should therefore
be allowed to use their initiative in performing their jobs and taking decision. It will give them the
motivation to work much harder.
