The Context of WIL 1(Teacher Choices in Action Course)
• Due to covid-19 high cases, WIL 1 was forfeited and replaced by DHET module, the Teacher Choices in Action Course.
• What went well?
 The module was very helpful in developing my ability to understand about learners’ different learning styles.
 Each section of the module had summary tasks, these tasks were good to test my understanding and to also challenge my
teaching philosophy in terms of which teaching strategies and pedagogies do I see most appropriate for teaching specific
mathematics topics.
 The module has equipped my skills to integrate technology in my classroom, most of the exercises were online and I had
to search and develop skills in order to complete these tasks.
 I have learned the importance of considering learner’s prior knowledge and experiences when teaching a new topics. This
is something I did not stress a lot about during my teaching course, however after being engaged with this module I noticed
that if prior knowledge is neglected, some learners may be excluded and not learn anything throughout the lesson.
• What went wrong?
 The scope of this course was mostly focused on primary school stuff and little high school, this somehow did not fit well on
my teaching philosophy more especially when I consider how learners learn. The level of reasoning of a primary learner is
different from that of a high school learner and there lies distinction when teaching primary learners and high school
learners.
 The scope of some of the mathematics problems in the module are not aligned to CAPS, which makes it a little bit
irrelevant for my teaching. For instance in some parts they included integral calculus of which in South Africa it’s covered in
Tertiary institution.
 Some sections I struggled to understand the significance of them being put in the module, and that mean I did not put so
much focus on them since it had not impact on my professional development as a student teacher.
The Context of WIL 2
• WIL 2 took place in April, it was a 3 weeks duration.
• I went to Sizanani High School, this school is in the rurals of Kwazulu-Natal in Newcastle.
• This is a very big school. Consisting of about +/-35 teachers, 9 cleaners, 4 Cookers, 3 Clerks and 2 securities.
• The school consist of about 5 mathematics teachers, 2 of them are in Senior phase and the rest 3 are in FET phase.
• The culture of teaching and learning in this school is very good, it is very rare to learners left alone without a teaching, and barely
find learners outside classrooms during teaching and learning times.
• The school principal is very strict, he enforces and ensures teacher do their tasks well, he is also a very supportive person and
open for them to discuss their problems, ideas or new strategies which could be deployed for the betterment of the school.
• How I developed professionally during WIL 2?
 Ms Thusi was my mentor teacher, during first week when I observed lessons. I noticed how she draws learners attention to keep
them engaged throughout the lesson. She made use of collaborate learning by means of group work and appointing each group
with a leader so that chaos and noise is managed during the lesson.
 Even though the school is in rural, however it still enforces they use of technology. This has been interesting because I learned
and discovered a lot of softwares and tools that maths teachers use to help learners learn. For instance Mrs Zuma the HOD of
Mathematics and Sciences mostly use an app called Graphing calculator when teaching functions especially plotting of these
functions.
 Due to Covid-19, sports were prohibited as announcement from the Department of Basic education, however the principal was
open to allow sport like chess, and I took part in that as extra-curricular activities.
 The staff members of the school are very open people, to share and exchange ideas. Teachers were so helpful with advising on
which strategies I can imply best for classroom management and it worked.
 The school cares for learners in a way that teachers are able to raise funds to assist learners they deem to be poor, they use
these funds to buy things like school uniform, shoes and stationery for those learners.
The Context of WIL 3
• WIL 3 took place from August-September, it was a 7 weeks longs.
• I went to Buhlebomzinyathi Secondary School, this school is located in Kwazulu-Natal, rurals of Newcastle.
• The school is not that big. it consist of +/-18 teachers, 4 cleaners, 4 cookers, 2 clerks and 3 securities(work in alternate shifts).
• The school is very chaotic, however some teachers consistently push themselves to the classroom to teach irrespective of poor
management.
• The school principal is somehow not too strict, hence the poor management and chaos in the classroom. Some teachers don’t
obey the ethics of the school.
• Not all learners that are chaotic, some classes are very good to teach, learners are active and participate during the teaching and
learning activities more especially those learners who are in science stream.
• Due to Covid-19 grade 8-11 learners did not attend all 5 days of the week, they had schedules per week on how they will be
attending.
• How I developed professionally during WIL 3?
 Mrs Khumalo was my mentor and I learned a lot from her more especially I learned the importance of deep prepartion prior the
lesson. She emphasized this as that sometimes we miss concepts we know and understand due to poor preparation and this
causes problems to learners when they are being assessed if something was not thouroughly taught.
 Despite the school being chaotic, I was able to schedule timetable for learners to even on days outside their attending days. Most
of the learners did attend these sessions and I used them effectively to help identify where they are in their learning, how did they
get there, and how to move them from there.
 Like in every school, there are always those learners who want to shine above the teacher. Luckily I was able to get support from
both my mentor teacher and the principal and applied the correct measures to discipline these learners.
 I was assisted by both my mentor teacher and other mathematics teacher whenever I had problems with certain topics, for
instance Mr Dubuzane taught the first part of Statistics of Grade 11 and I proceeded after he did the introduction to the topic.
