Arizona State Requirements Concept 6: Research Research writing is a process in which the writer identifies a topic or question to be answered. The writer locates and evaluates information about the topic or question, and then organizes, summarizes, and synthesizes the information into a finished product. High School: Grade 10 PO 1.  Write a research report that incorporates  evidence  in support of a  thesis  or claim; integrates information from two or more pieces of primary and/or secondary research information; makes distinctions between the relative value and significance of specific data, facts, and ideas; integrates direct quotes; uses  internal citations  includes a works cited, bibliography, or reference page.
Vocabulary Evidence – research supporting thesis Thesis – claim or statement you are making about topic Internal Citations – telling reader where you found information or quotes used in paper
What do you need to do? Pick a topic from the given list. Narrow topic into something more specific that you can research and write about in seven weeks. Research online; at library; in newspapers, magazines; on TV or video. Write 3-4 page paper about your research. Create a poster and speech about research.
Requirements Typed – 3-4 pages and 1 Works Cited page Times New Roman 12 point font Double spaced 1 inch margins  Pages numbered Minimum of 3 research sources
Other Requirements Research Notes Topic Outline Rough Draft Research Display (Poster) Oral Presentation (Speech) 3 to 4 minutes in length

Grading Paper is worth 200 points Oral Presentation is worth 50 points Research Display is worth 50 points 300 points total (approximately 10% of your total grade)
Frequently Asked Questions May I change my topic if I don’t like what I originally chose? You may change your topic once before the second note check; after that, you keep the topic you have. Can we work in partners? No, there are enough topic choices for everyone to have their own. Do I have to do the presentation and/or display? If you don’t do the presentation or the display, the highest grade possible on the project is a C(81%). If you only do the paper, the highest grade possible on the project is a F(66%).
F.A.Q. Continued Do I have to type my paper? Yes, time will be provided during class and fourth period the week before papers are due. Do I have to go to the library? No, but only 2 of your sources can be from the Internet-type websites.  All other sources must be from books, magazines, newspapers, or other references.  You may use the Internet to look up online versions of magazines, newspapers, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. There will be an opportunity to go to the library with me once. You will need to return permission slips a week prior to the field trip.
Other questions? Raise Hand and wait to be called on. When questions are done, take time to review topics and choose your top 3. If you can’t decide your top 3 in class, it is homework and due tomorrow.
