What is Personal Resilience?
 Ability to perform effectively under pressure
 Bounce back from difficult circumstances
 Manage our overall health & wellbeing
 Understand how to achieve optimum performance

It is the personal challenge of striving for balance and harmony
in the key areas of our Cognition, Emotional and Physiological functioning as
well as understanding and playing to the strengths of our personality.

And, to be able to manage these in the context of our
                    personal and working environments
What do you observe about yourself when
           you are resilient?

Why now? continuum

 Pace of change
 Current economic climate
 Greater expectations – more for less
 Technology
 Stress & burn out on the increase
 Effectiveness of ‘training’
 Presenteeism on the increase
 Return on investment
Cost to the Economy

    2.2 mil people suffer ill-health – considered
      work-related

 190 million working days lost due to absence

 Employees average 6.5days off sick

     Costs economy £17 billion (2011)
…… including over £2.7bn from 30.4 million days of "sickies"

Cost to the Economy

1 million people report sick EVERY WEEK!

         • 3,000 of those will remain off sick after 6 months

         • 2,400 of those will not work again in the next 5 years

         • After 6 months sickness absence, fewer than 50% will ever return to
           the workplace

         • After 2 years on Incapacity Benefit an individual is more likely to
retire or die than return to work
