Valedictorian Speech
Dr. Seuss once said “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.” I chose this quote because this quote really goes with what I will be talking about today. How so you may ask? I’ll get to it in just a while, because right now I have something I would like you guys to see. (After showing picture one) Haha, just kidding! (After showing picture two) This is what I will be talking about… What now?
What now? From everything we have learned at school, what will you remember? What will you forget? What will you use in the future? The Learner Profiles that are a set of ideals that should be inspiring and motivating. And that are, oh so famous in our school, will you use them later on in life? Or will you forget them? I know most of you think Learner Profiles are boring and useless, but that’s only when you use them in your reflections.
Learner Profiles are things that you will use in the future. Like being a Risk- Taker. You might go bungee jumping. You might go skydiving. Or you might do something that you never thought you would do. This is all coming under the learner profile of being a risk-taker.
At school, Communicators are what we are. Some of you may not know this, but Communicator is a Learner Profile. The school teaches us how to meet new people. How to talk to people. How to communicate in different ways. How to present speeches to an audience. All these communication skills help us in the future to land a job, or make new friends.
These were just examples of 2 learner profiles that we use now, and that will be very useful in the near future. The question now is how will you use them in the future?
Dr. Seuss said, “Waiting for the fish to bite or waiting for wind to fly a kite. Or waiting around for Friday night or waiting perhaps for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil or a better break or a string of pearls or a pair of pants or a wig with curls or another chance. Everyone is just waiting.” With that quote, what I’m trying to say is Carpe Diem. Make the most of the present time and give little thought to the future. Live as if today was your last day.
Finally, to all of you graduates sitting in front of me, with whom I’ve shared many fond memories with. I hope that as we end this chapter of our lives, we are also ready to start a new life. I wish you all the best of the best. Good luck and congratulations, Class of 2014!
