Skill test for basketball
• There are a number of tests and test batteries used for
testing basketball skill.
• Only two of the widely used test batteries will be
discussed in this presentation
1. Johnson Basketball Test
2. Stroup Basketball Test
Johnson Basketball Test
• L. Willian Johnson Proposed a Test Battery for High
School Boys to measure Basketball abilities.
• He composed three Test Items:
1. Field Goal Speed Test.
2. Basketball throw for accuracy.
3. Dribble.
• The battery reliability and validity were 0.89 and 0.88
respectively
Johnson Basketball Test (cont)
1: Field Goal Speed Test.
• Starting at any position under the basket in any position
he desires.
• Throws as many basket as he can in 30 seconds.
• 1 basket = 1 point
Johnson Basketball Test (cont)
• Basketball throw for accuracy.
• A series of rectangles arranged one inside of the other on
the wall 14 inches above the floor.
• The dimensions of the rectangles are as follows;
• 1: 60 x 40 inches 2: 40 x 25 inches 3: 20 x 10 inches
• The subject is given 10 trials from a distance of 40 feet,
using baseball pass or hook pass.
• Scoring: 3 points inner rectangle, 2 in middle and 1 in outer.

Johnson Basketball Test (cont)
• Dribble:
• Four hurdles are placed in a line 6 feet apart and at a distance
of 12 feet from a 6 feet long starting line.
• The subject starts from one end o the starting line and dribbles
around through the hurdles and back to the other end of the
starting line.
• Scoring: the number of zones crossed in 30 seconds
Johnson Basketball Test (cont)
• The Three tests are scored as battery by adding the three
obtained scores.
• The total score range was 16 to 68, with the median at
42.
Stroup Basketball Test
• Francis Stroup used the score made by competing teams
as criterion for validating his basketball skill test.
• 84 % of the games were won by the teams who scored
high on the following tests.
1. Goal Shooting.
2. Wall Passing
3. Dribbling.
Stroup Basketball Test (Cont)
1: Goal Shooting
• Starting at any position on the floor, the subject shoots as
many baskets as possible in 1 minute.
• If the ball gets out of control, the subject has to retrieve
the ball each time himself
Stroup Basketball Test (Cont)
2: Wall Passing
• The subject stands behind a line 6 feet from a wall.
• Passes the ball against the wall as many times as
possible in one minute.
• A pass is not counted if the ball is batted instead of
caught and passed
• And if the subject moves over the restraining line when
making a pass.

3: Dribbling
• Seven bottles are placed in a line 15 feet apart for a 90
feet distance.
• The subject starts at any end and dribbles alternately to
the left and right and circles the end bottle each time.
• A miss is counted if a bottle is knocked over or if the
bottle is not passed on the proper side.
• Scoring: the number of bottles properly passed in one
minute
