WHY ARE THE SPOTTED OWL ENDANGERED AND WHAT CAN WE DO TO HELP? ➤ WHY ARE THEY ENDANGERED? ➤ The northern Spotted owl has now been put on British Columbia’s Red list because of how small its population has become and their continuing habitat loss. - 5. HISTORY ON THE SPOTTED OWL AND WHAT IS BEING DONE TO HELP THE OWLS ➤ The spotted owl was first protected in 1990. After almost a century of logging in their habitat, the northern spotted owl was then licenced as a threatened species under the endanger species act. The spotted owl is a “keystone,” it is an indicator species for old growth for many other forests’ dependent species. In the 1990s a lot of the logging industry saw the northern spotted owl as the threat or an enemy when Federal Judge Dwyer forced the Forest Service to preserve the owls and its habitat. ➤ The spotted owl was also put through a five-year scientific review by the US Fish and Wildlife Service back in 2000
