UNDERSTANDING
MEANING AND MESSAGE

1-When the HELP of
Allah has come and
the VICTORY,
2-And you see the
people entering into
the religion of Allah
in multitudes,
3-Then exalt [Him]
with praise of your
Lord and ask
forgiveness of Him.
Indeed, He is ever
Accepting of
repentance

INTRODUCING
Sūrat an-
Naṣr ( ‫ﺳ‬‫ﻮ‬‫ر‬‫ة‬‫ا‬‫ﻟ‬‫ﻨ‬‫ﺼ‬‫ﺮ‬ )
Divine Support
• It is the 110th sura of the Qur’an with 3 ayat.
• An-Nasr means both “the victory” and “the help
or assistance”.
• It is the third shortest Surah after Al-Asr and Al-
Kawthar by number of ayah.
• According to Tafsir ibn Kathir, this sura, like
Surat Al-Ikhlas, is an equivalent to ‘one fourth of
the entire Qur’an’.
• This Surah was revealed a few months before
the Prophet’s (saw) death
• It was the last revealed Surah.

frequently
Aisha (r.a) said that the Messenger of Allah
(saw) used to repeat very frequently, towards
the end of his life:
‘Exaltations and praises be to Allah, whose
forgiveness I ask; I repent of my sins.’
He also said, ‘My Lord told me I would see a
sign in my nation.
He ordered me to praise Him, the Forgiving,
and ask His pardon when I see this sign.
Indeed, I have.

Victory and
entrance of
people in
Islam
• The Conquest’ (it is stated by most
commentators) is a reference to the conquest
of Makkah.
• The Arab tribes were waiting forMuslims,
before accepting Islam to enter Islam
• They said, ‘If Muhammad (s.a.w), prevails over
his people, he would indeed be a prophet.’
• Consequently, when that was accomplished,
they accepted Islam in large numbers.
• Not two years were to pass after the conquest
of Makkah when the whole Arabian Peninsula
was dominated by Islam.
• Thanks to Allah, every Arab tribe had
declared its belief in Islam.

After
revelation of
this Surah,
Prophet told
about his
death
• Ibn ‘Abbas (r.a) said:
• When this surah was first revealed, the
Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) called Fatimah (r.a)
and said, ‘My death has been announced to
me.’
• She was seen to start crying, then she smiled.
• She explained later, ‘I cried when he told me of
his approaching death.
• But he said to me, ‘Be restrained, because you
will be the first of my family to join me’, so I
smiled. (Baihaqi)

Ibn Abbas
explains
about
Surah Nasr in
an assembly
of Umar(RA)
• Ibn Abbas says: " Umar used to invite me to sit in
his assembly along with some of the important
elderly Companions who had fought at Badr”
• Once, Umar(RA) asked the Companions of Badr:
"What do you say about Idha jaa nasrullahi wal-
fath?"
• Some said: "In it we have been enjoined to praise
Allah and ask for His forgiveness when His help
come, and we attain victory.”
• Umar(RA) asked me: "What is your view? "I
submitted that it implied the last hour of Allah's
Messenger (SAW).
• He was informed that when Allah's succor came
and victory was attained, it would be a sign that his
hour had come; therefore, he should praise Allah
and ask for His forgiveness.”
(Bukhari, Musnad Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn Jarir, Ibn
Marduyah, Baghawi, Baihaqi, Ibn al-Mundhir)

TIME OF REVELATION
• Abdullah bin Abbas (ra) states that this is the last Surah of the
Quran to be revealed, i. e. no complete Surah was sent down to
the Holy Prophet after it. (Muslim Nasai, Tabarani, Ibn Abi Shaibah,
Ibn Marduyah).
• Abdullah bin Umar (ra), this Surah was sent down on the occasion
of the Farewell Pilgrimage in the middle of the Tashriq Days at
Mina, and after it the Holy Prophet rode his she camel and gave his
well-known Sermon. (Tirmidhi, Bazzar, Baihaqi)
• If both these traditions are read together, it appears that there was
an interval of three months and some days between the revelation
of Surah An-Nasr and the Holy Prophet's death

Theme and Subject Matter
Allah in this Surah had informed His Messenger (SAW) that when Islam attained
complete victory in Arabia and the people started entering Allah's religion in great
numbers, it would mean that his mission was fulfilled.
Prophet (SAW) was told to praise and glorify Allah by Whose bounty he had been able
to accomplish such a great task, and should implore Him to forgive whatever failings he
might have shown in the performance of the service
Abdullah bin Masud(RA), when this Surah was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (SAW)
frequently began to recite the words Subhanak-Allahumma wa bi-hamdika, Allahumm-
aghfirli, subhanaka Rabbana wa bi-hamdika, Allahumm-aghfirli, innaka anta at-
Tawwab al-Ghafur.(Ibn Jarir, Musnad Ahmad, Ibn Abi Hatim).

‫إ‬ِ‫ذ‬َ‫ا‬‫ﺟ‬َ‫ﺎ‬‫ء‬َ‫ﻧ‬َ‫ﺼ‬ْ‫ﺮ‬ُ/‫ﱠ‬ِ‫و‬َ‫ا‬‫ﻟ‬ْ‫ﻔ‬َ‫ﺘ‬ْ‫ﺢ‬ُ-110:1
• This means decisive victory after which there remained no power in the land
to resist and oppose Islam.
• It became evident that Islam alone would hold sway in Arabia
• Some commentators say it refers to the Conquest of Makkah. But the
conquest of Makkah took place in A.H. 8, and this Surah was revealed
towards the end of A.H.10
• The conquest of Makkah broke the power of the Arabian pagans, but they
showed clear signs of resistance.
• The battles of Ta'if and Hunain were fought after it
• It took Islam about two years to attain complete control over Arabia.

Crowds entering in Islam
• This happened from the beginning of A.H. 9, because
of which that year has been described as the year of
deputations.
• Deputations from every part of Arabia started coming
before the Holy Messenger (SAW), entering Islam and
taking the oath of allegiance to him
• When he went for the Farewell Pilgrimage to Makkah, in
A.H. 10, the whole of Arabia had become Muslim, and
• Not a single polytheist remained anywhere in the
country.

‫و‬َ‫ا‬‫ﺳ‬ْ‫ﺘ‬َ‫ﻐ‬ْ‫ﻔ‬ِ‫ﺮ‬ْ‫ه‬ُۚ‫إ‬ِ‫ﻧ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ﮫ‬ُ
‫ﻛ‬َ‫ﺎ‬‫ن‬َ‫ﺗ‬َ‫ﻮ‬‫ﱠ‬‫ا‬‫ﺑ‬ً‫ﺎ‬-
110:3
• Tasbih means to regard Allah as pure and free
from every blemish and weakness.
• ‘Hamd’ implies praising and hallowing Allah
Almighty as well as thanking and paying
obeisance to Him
• Hamd means that regarding his great victory no
one should ever think that it was the result of any
excellence of his own.
• He should attribute it to Allah's favor and mercy,
• Must thank Allah alone for it, and acknowledge
with the heart and tongue that praise and gratitude
for the victory and success belonged to Allah
alone

Pray for forgiveness
• A man might have performed the highest possible service to
Islam, yet he should never think that he has fulfilled the right his
Lord had on him wholly.
• He should implore Allah, saying: "Lord, overlook and forgive
whatever weakness I might have shown in rendering Your right,
and accept the little service that I have been able to perform.“
• None in the world has struggled so hard in the cause of Allah as
the Prophet (SAW) did.
• How can another person regard his work as superb and think that
he has fulfilled the right Allah had imposed on him? Seek
forgiveness.
• Allah's right, in fact, is so supreme that no creature can ever fulfill
and render it truly and fully.

Allah in this command has taught Muslims an eternal
lesson:
• Do not regard any of your worship, devotion or religious service as
something superb;
• Even if you spent your entire life in the cause of Allah, you should always
think that you could not do all that was required of you by your Lord.
• Likewise, when you attain some victory, do not regard it due to some
excellence in yourselves but as a result of only
• Always think Allah's bounty and favor brought it to you.
• Then bowing humbly before your Lord, you should praise and glorify Him,
and should repent and beg for His forgiveness
• Do not boast and brag of your success and victory.
