S0CIAL MEDIA AND STUDENT LIFE
● Social media and digital technologies have a huge influence on
students’ education.
● These two concepts may be beneficial at times, but they can
also negatively impact on a child’s education, health and
communication skills
● Students have become victims of social media more than
anyone because they get attracted to these sites to kill
boredom during studying.
● They become the victims of sexual predators and manipulators.
● 67% of the teenagers believe that a significant portion of
bullying happens offline. They feel safe using social media
platforms, and cyber-bullying is not such a significant threat
● Getting too involved in social media can lead to
an addiction that inculcates bad habits. Students prefer to chat
with friends for hours, this leads to a waste of time that could
have been used for studying, playing or learning new skills.
● It is often said that a long-term friendship or relationship is
developed when people meet each other, spend time with one
another and share their experiences. But this virtual way of
communication does not lead to a natural, friendly experience
and hence, cannot produce a healthy relationship
● Students have become prone to frequent fluctuations in mood
and self-control. If one of a student’s friends posted about their
present relationship with someone, then other friends are
pressed to do a similar thing.
● Actions that attract more public attention hold more value,
despite some of them being immoral or illegal.
CYBER
BULLYING
CYBER BULLYING
● One of the very main negative impact of social media on youth as
some of the negative minded people use it for bullying someone.
● Harmful bullying behavior can include posting rumors about a
person, threats, disclose victim’s personal information, or
pejorative labels (i.e. Hate speech).
● It increases the risk of confusion, sex abuse, and threats that can
result in deep emotional wounds.
DO THE RIGHT THING… EVEN WHEN NO ONE IS
LOOKING !
Mental Health Effects
Social media has become a
dangerous pastime for
individuals suffering from
depression, anxiety,
suicidal tendencies, and
other mental health issues.
Medical experts attest that
school aged children are
afflicted with sleep disorders
because of elevated social
media usage. In turn, these
sleep disorders severely
affect the children’s ability to
maintain a healthy lifestyle
and impedes their ability to
perform well in school
WHY IS SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTIVE ?
● It may have started as a way to connect with friends and family,
but social media is rapidly becoming a compulsion. It’s one of the
first things you check on your phone after waking and the last thing
you view before going to bed. And it’s continually influencing your
brain.
● Mindlessly scrolling through posts, images, and videos may seem
harmless, but dopamine signals associated with pleasure are being
released in your brain. It feels good, and your brain recognises this,
so you begin to spend more and more time on it.
● But the reward is short-lived. Eventually, those good
feelings wear off, and you find yourself reaching for
your phone to kill a few more minutes. Monitoring
social media wards off boredom, isolation, and,
ironically, engaging with the world around you.
You’re irritable or
restless when you don’t
have access to your
social network
you get upset, defensive
or angry when people
point out that you’re
always on your phone
You would prefer to
spend time online than
with family and friends.
The first thing you do
when waking is to log
into your chosen social
media app
6 ways to identify if you have a social media
addiction.
You can’t go an hour
without checking your
phone.
When you have a
problem, you turn to
social media to escape
it
HOW TO BREAK THE HABIT…?
● It can take up to three weeks for a habit to form; but
breaking it can take anywhere from ten weeks to 265 days.
So set realistic expectations.
● Take it day by day. So on day one, try to cut your social
media use by five or ten minutes.
● Day two, extend it to thirty—day three, start designating
times for social updates. And while you’re doing this, invest
in other rewarding activities.
● Take up a hobby you’ve always wanted to or that you know
you enjoy. Set aside time each day to do yoga or meditate.
● Once you find yourself logging into your social accounts less
and less, consider deleting the apps.
● Try spending more time with your family and friends.
● Be productive.

QUESTIONS FOR SELF REFLECTION
HOW OFTEN DO YOU CHECK ANY SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT ?
HOW WOULD YOU REACT IF SOCIAL MEDIA SITES ARE REMOVED
FROM YOUR LIFE PERMANENTLY…?
Be mindful of
how you spend
your time on
Social-Media.
