Essay Title Essay Title ‘ The concept of Web 2.0 is centrally important to understanding new media in the 21 st century’ (Terry Flew). Discuss with reference to specific examples of new media and Web 2.0 culture and technology.
Twitter – micro-blogging Traditional media such as radio and television are beginning to take note of Twitter... recently Jonathan Ross (Wossy) and Stephen Fry (StephenFry) chatted about it on TV Chris Moyles (ChrisDJMoyles) gave it a go on his radio show News stories and search traffic about Twitter are increasing suddenly

When Stephen Fry ‘tweets’, over 130,000 people instantly have his message displayed on their Twitter home page...
...and on my Twitter page I am currently ‘following’ and being ‘followed’ by around 20 people...we are connecting, conversing, communing, participating, and openly sharing...these are the social practices of new media using Web 2.0 technologies...
Monitter.com Monitter ‘ is a twitter monitor, it lets you ‘monitter’ the Twitter world for a set of keywords and watch what people are saying’ Put in some keywords and watch all the socialising that is taking place and being published
The ‘newness’ of new media Digital technologies generally and network media such as the internet and mobile phones and converged devices such as games consoles are creating a sense of a change in the use of media in everyday life – this is the ‘newness’ of new media
Essay Title Analysis Topic new media Focus Web 2.0 Viewpoint Web 2.0 is central to understanding new media Instruction explain the meaning of something and explore the meaning in a logical way
Web 2.0 and new media ‘ The concept of Web 2.0 is centrally important to understanding new media in the 21 st century’ (Flew 2008, p.16) Why does Flew think this is true?
Why does Flew hold this viewpoint? Flew is trying to understand what new media is Flew stresses that understanding new media is about questioning what is new for society in the use of media New media at the moment is digital media Digital media is convergent media
Convergent media Convergent media combines computing, communications and content (media) [‘three Cs’]
New media (Flew 2008) The development of the internet and the web have been central to the convergence of digital media
The Internet and WWW as New Media ‘ The concept of new media is integrally bound up with the history of the Internet and the World Wide Web’ (Flew 2008, p.4) And Web 2.0 is the latest succesful idea that influences the way that the internet and web is developing
Why did Web 2.0 become so important for imagining what the web should be? Flew (2008) gives two reasons: features such as participation, interactivity, collaborative learning, social networking, and collective intelligence were valued about web technology from the very beginning some of the fastest growing websites of the 2000s have been based on Web 2.0 principles – sites such as the photography site Flickr , the online encyclopedia Wikipedia , the online user-generated video site YouTube , blog sites such as Blogger , and the various social network sites such as MySpace and Facebook
Web 2.0 and New Media Therefore, according to Flew, Web 2.0 is central to understanding new media And since new media suggests ‘newness’ in society, we should be thinking about how Web 2.0 involves new social practices
David Gauntlett David Gauntlett is a lecturer at the University of Westminster. He lectures about new media and the web. He turns his lectures into online media content such as video. He is copying the practices he sees are changing our relationship to media.
A 7 minute version of a one hour lecture on YouTube This is Gauntlett’s YouTube -sized version of his talk on media change in everyday life http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWNXg7Vt-ig
What is new for society about new media? New social practices? Artefacts and devices that allow communication Communication activities and practices Social arrangements and organisations formed around devices and practices
Web 2.0 and New Media What are the new social practices of Web 2.0 and new media? To explore that we need to explain the meaning of Web 2.0 and new media Web 2.0 and new media are ideas and concepts not actual things or processes Web 2.0 is an idea about using the internet as a platform for widespread user participation New media refers to digital media and the ‘newness’ of media in everyday life
What is Web 2.0? an idea about a second generation of web services and tools that emerged around 2004
What is Web 2.0? ‘ Web 2.0 is a concept or idea that is applied to a renewed sense of how the Internet should be used as a platform. It emerged around 2003-2004 as a discussion about the way that computers and the World Wide Web should be used for successful business and to recognize some of the features of the Web as communication that were there from the beginning, but tended to get overlooked as the Web developed in its first years’ (Module Handbook p.9).
What is Web 2.0? ‘ Thus, Web 2.0 does not refer to a completely new upgraded technological version of the Web, but more to a conceptual division between an earlier version of the Internet (Web 1.0) prior to 2004 that was seen to be failing, and a newer, improved way of using the strengths of the Web as a communication technology’ (Module Handbook p.9).
Google Trends http://www.google.com/trends Google Trends lets you chart the trends in Google searches and news references
Web 2.0 Search Volume Search interest in ‘Web 2.0’ emerges at the end of 2004 and rises rapidly during 2005-2006
New Media The term ‘new media’ predates Web 2.0, but online search interest about it is declining steadily
Difference between ‘Web 2.0’ and ‘new media’ Web 2.0 is an industry term developed by web and internet professionals, people in the online business community New media has developed as a theoretical concern in academic institutions such as universities about the impact of computer and network media, and digital technologies in media more generally
New Media Studies ‘ The term ‘new media’ has become an effective catchword both as a description of the digital delivery of media via the Internet, DVD and digital television and as a reference to the ‘newness’ such technologies have brought to media more generally ’ (Harries, 2002 p.ix)
New media: participation – from audience to user The ‘newness’ of new media? Participating in and making media is regarded as being a new practice Ideas about participation in books about new media can be found in the use of Web 2.0 tools and services
Examples of Web 2.0 practices User-generated content Social networking Virtual worlds Online games
New media / Web 2.0 There are overlapping principles of Web 2.0 and new media concerns about the newness of media, particularly around the changing social characteristics of media in everyday life – the rise of ‘social media’
Web 2.0 Characteristics Participation Interactivity Collaborative learning Social networking Collective intelligence
Web 2.0 principles and social media values Web 2.0 principles Many-to-many connectivity Decentralised control User-focused, easy to use Open standards Light administration Modifications and changes allowed Flew (2008) social media values Participation Openness Conversation Community Connectedness Mayfield (2007) Jun 7, 2009
(Mayfield, 2007, p.5)
Blogs are social media Blog software and tools are social media They allow people to mediate their lives and share this media with other people People are connected through reading and writing, watching and listening (old media) Bloggers integrate convergent media into their everyday lives and turn their everyday life into media Blogging is both technological experience of everyday life and media representation of our everyday lives Personal publishing, a new form of broadcasting? Not mass media, but masses of media made by the mass?
I have a friend who writes a blog about her family life living abroad. http://the-perpetual-expatriate.blogspot.com/
Social Media (instead of Web 2.0 or new media)? ‘ What's changed is that where once tools for media creation and publishing were controlled by an elite, digital technology is increasingly putting them into our hands . We can consume, interact with, create and share media more freely than ever - and this changes the power relationship between us and the mainstream media. We are entering the age of social media’ Anthony Lilley The Royal Television Society Huw Wheldon Memorial Lecture 2007
Growing, uneven interest in the concept of ‘social media’
Use examples and case studies in your essay Think about specific examples and case studies to illustrate your explanation and exploration of the concepts of Web 2.0 and new media
Micro-blogging: Twitter – simultaneously broadcasting and one-to-one and many to many forms of communication ‘ Twitter puts you in control’- the shifting location of social media?
How is Web 2.0 technology becoming social media and changing people’s lives? User Minxuan’s presentation on ‘How Twitter Changed My Life’ has been viewed nearly 7,000 times in one week http://www.slideshare.net/minxuan/how-twitter-changed-my-life-presentation
Key Questions to Study for the Essay What is Web 2.0? What is new media? Why does Flew think Web 2.0 is so important? Do you agree with him? How does Web 2.0 involve new social practices? Are there significant changes in the use of media as part of everyday life
Develop an Argument Your essay should respond to Terry Flew’s viewpoint in the essay title Do you agree with him that Web 2.0 is central to understanding new media? If so, why? If not, why? I have some ideas that I will be developing on my essay page in the Wernicke Wiki I look forward to reading about yours on your essay page too
