THE PROPHET JEREMIAH
The Weeping Prophet
Session #8
WELCOME TO LEARNING TO PROPHESY
CONNECT GROUP
CTF AIRPORT
WINTER SEMINAR
Marco Lafebre
Leader
WHO IS JEREMIAH?
• A prophet in Jerusalem at the time of the siege and
destruction by the Babylonians.
• Contemporary with the kings of Judah: Josiah, Jehoahaz,
Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin (Coniah), Zedekiah.
• Dealt with the false prophet Hananiah.
• Mistreated by almost everybody.
"THE WEEPING PROPHET".
• Jeremiah was the son of Hilkiah, a Jewish priest from the
Benjamite village of Anathoth.
• The difficulties he encountered, as described in the books
of Jeremiah and Lamentations, have made him be refer
by scholars as "the weeping prophet".
• Jeremiah was called to prophetic ministry c. 626 BC.
JEREMIAH WAS DESPISED
• Like most of the prophets, Jeremiah was despised and
abused.
• The temple chief had Jeremiah beaten and put in the stocks
• His countrymen tried to have him executed
• Jehoiakim burned the scroll sent to him by Jeremiah.
• He was thrown down a well and left to die
• He was accused of telling lies to those who consulted him
THE PROPHET IS CALLED.
JEREMIAH
1:4-6 (NKJV)
• 4 Then the word of the LORD came to
me, saying:
• 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I
knew you; Before you were born I
sanctified you; I ordained you a
prophet to the nations.”
• 6 Then said I:
• “Ah, Lord GOD!
Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a
youth.”
JEREMIAH
1:7-8 (NKJV)
• 7 But the LORD said to me:
• “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’
For you shall go to all to whom I
send you,
And whatever I command you, you
shall speak.
8 Do not be afraid of their faces,
For I am with you to deliver you,”
says the LORD.
JEREMIAH
1:9-10
(NKJV)
• 9 Then the LORD put forth His hand
and touched my mouth, and
the LORD said to me:
• “Behold, I have put My words in your
mouth.
10 See, I have this day set you over
the nations and over the kingdoms,
To root out and to pull down,
To destroy and to throw down,
To build and to plant.”
JEREMIAH
1:1112
(NKJV)
• 11 Moreover the word of
the LORD came to me, saying,
“Jeremiah, what do you see?”
• And I said, “I see a branch of an
almond tree.”
• 12 Then the LORD said to me, “You
have seen well, for I am ready to
perform My word.”
JEREMIAH
1:13-14
(NKJV)
• 13 And the word of the LORD came to
me the second time, saying, “What
do you see?”
• And I said, “I see a boiling pot, and it
is facing away from the north.”
• 14 Then the LORD said to me:
• “Out of the north calamity shall
break forth
On all the inhabitants of the land.
JEREMIAH
1:18-19
(NKJV)
• 18 For behold, I have made you this day
A fortified city and an iron pillar,
And bronze walls against the whole
land—
Against the kings of Judah,
Against its princes,
Against its priests,
And against the people of the land.
19 They will fight against you,
But they shall not prevail against you.
For I am with you,” says the LORD, “to
deliver you.”
JEREMIAH PREDICTED THE
FALL AND TRIBULATION
OF JUDAH
But also, what would take place after.
JEREMIAH PROPHESIES JUDAH'S EXILE
• Jeremiah prophesies and laments Judah's exile in Judah.
• He speaks these prophecies during the reigns of the last
four kings of Judah: Josiah, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin,
Zedekiah.
• Hananiah falsely prophesies that the Babylonian yoke will
be broken in only two years.
JEREMIAH PROPHECIES RESTORATION.
• Jeremiah informs the first exiles in Babylon that their
captivity will last 70 years and denounces false prophets
who say otherwise (29).
• The restoration of Israel and Judah is predicted (Jeremiah
30-31). This primarily has application to the coming of the
Messiah
• Jeremiah imprisoned
• Jeremiah buys a field although the land is enemy-
occupied
• Zedekiah's death prophesied (34)
• Judah condemned for not freeing her slaves (34)
JEREMIAH
18:1-4
(NKJV)
THE POTTER
AND THE
CLAY
• 18 The word which came to Jeremiah
from the LORD, saying: 2 “Arise and go
down to the potter’s house, and there I
will cause you to hear My words.” 3 Then I
went down to the potter’s house, and
there he was, making something at the
wheel. 4 And the vessel that he made of
clay was marred in the hand of the potter;
so he made it again into another vessel, as
it seemed good to the potter to make.
JEREMIAH 35
(NKJV
)
THE
OBEDIENT
RECHABITES
• 35 The word which came to Jeremiah
from the LORD in the days of
Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of
Judah, saying, 2 “Go to the house of
the Rechabites, speak to them, and
bring them into the house of
the LORD, into one of the chambers,
and give them wine to drink.”
JEREMIAH
35:6-9
(NKJV)
• 6 But they said, “We will drink no wine, for
Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father,
commanded us, saying, ‘You shall drink no
wine, you nor your sons, forever. 7 You
shall not build a house, sow seed, plant a
vineyard, nor have any of these; but all
your days you shall dwell in tents, that you
may live many days in the land where you
are sojourners.’
WHO WERE
THE
RECHABITES?
• Members of a family descended from
Hammath, the progenitor of the house of
Rechab; known as the Kenites, who were
the descendants of Jethro, the father-in-
law of Moses.
• In Jeremiah (35) it is recorded that the
prophet took some Rechabites into the
Temple and offered them wine to drink,
and that they declined.
THE
RECHABITES
FIDELITY
• They declined on the ground that
Jehonadab, son of Rechab, their ancestor,
had commanded them not to drink wine
or other strong drink, or to live in houses,
or to sow seed, or to plant vineyards, and
had enjoined them to dwell in tents all
their days.
• Jeremiah used this fidelity of the
Rechabites to their principles as an object-
lesson in his exhortations to his
contemporaries.

seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all
your heart.
•Jeremiah 31:3 New King James Version (NKJV)

And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.
• Jeremiah 31:16-17 New King James Version (NKJV)
• 16 Thus says the LORD:
• “Refrain your voice from weeping,
And your eyes from tears;
For your work shall be rewarded, says the LORD,

That your children shall come back to their own border.
