This document seeks to clarify terms that are commonly used in discussions around social sustainability but are often loosely defined or used interchangeably, including social capital, social impact, social value, social return on investment (SROI), social license to operate, and social contract. It examines the origins and meanings of these terms and explores their relationships and implications. While useful concepts, there is no clear demarcation between the terms, leading to confusion. Organizations like the WBCSD and Forum for the Future have an opportunity to help establish best practices and reduce confusion around these important but muddled topics.
