grow up?
Craft Worker

Farmer

Teacher
Doctor
Astronaut
Baker

Hairdresser
Fisherman

When I grow up I want to be…..
Why do we need a
job?
We need a job because…
We need to earn money.
We call this a salary.
With our salary we can buy…

Food

Clothes

a House

a Car
We can classify jobs into three
sectors…
PRIMARY
SECONDARY
TERTIARY
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KDxAWfMwf4
The three job sectors…
Primary sector jobs: obtain or process natural products
Secondary sector jobs transform natural products into

manufactured products
Tertiary sector jobs provide a service
Primary Sector
 The primary sector obtain or process natural products.
 These natural resources can come from livestock, crops, the sea

or from the Earth.
 These jobs include:

Livestock Farmer

Fisherman

Arable Farmer

Miner
Arable Farming
 Arable farmers are farmers who grow crops.
 Once farmed, crops are used for food and other products. This is

important.

 Dry crops, like olive trees, wheat and grapes only need rainwater

to grow and can grow in poor soil (Andalucía!)
 Irrigated crops, like tomatoes, potatoes and rice need a form of

watering called ‘irrigation’ to grow. The farmers do this.
The Irrigation of Crops
Livestock Farming
Livestock farmers rear animals such as cows, pigs, sheep and

chickens.

Rear (verb) to look after
animals

From these animals, we get products like meat, milk or skins.

Intensive farming means the animals live and eat in small spaces.
Free-range farming means the animals live outside and have space to

move and eat grass.
Can you match up the types of
Livestock Farming?
Pig Farming

Cattle Farming

Poultry Farming
Sheep Farming

Secondary Sector: Craft and
Industry
Manufactured products are made by transforming

natural products into other things.
So natural products like flour or wood are farmed by

farmers and then used by secondary sector jobs to make
into products.

This can be done by craft or by industry.
Craft Workers
Craft workers use their hands or simple tools to make unique

products.




Carpenter
Cake baker
Industrial Workers
Industrial workers mass-produce products.
Mass-production is very quick and makes lots of the same thing.
This usually happens in factories using machines.



Cake Factory

Toy Factory
Tertiary Sector: provides a service
Many people have jobs that provide a service.
We can classify these jobs into different groups like: education,

health care, tourism, transport and retail.
Can you think of a job in the education sector?
Can you think of a job in the retail sector?
Tertiary Sector: provides a service

Doctor

Waiter

Pilot

Teacher
In which sector do you

think the majority of
Spanish people work?
 Primary

Secondary

Tertiary
Spain
In Spain, about 5% of people work in the primary sector,

30% in the secondary sector, and 65% in the tertiary
sector.
Activity
Think of an adult in your life who has

a job.
In English, tell your partner what job

your adult has and consider which
sector that job is in.
Eg. ‘He/She is a nurse. A nurse is in

the tertiary sector.
