Favorite Things
“Why, in a world full of ideas to discover, develop, and discuss, do people
spend the majority of their time talking about themselves? Recent research
suggests a simple explanation: because it feels good.”
– The Neuroscience of Everybody’s Favorite Topic
Research: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-neuroscience-of-everybody-favorite-topic-themselves/
Study Shows
1. On average: Ppl spend 60% of
conversations talking about themselves;
80% when on Social Media
2. Why? Neuroscience: Brain Chemicals!
Dopamine!
- Harvard University Social Cognitive & Affective
Neuroscience Lab (functional magnetic reasoning
imaging: fMRI)
- Medial Prefrontal Cortex (MPFC): high levels
of brain activity
- Mesolimbic Dopamine System: 2 other regions
(previously not discovered), which are associated
with ~ reward ~
3. Crux: Unclear if, when others talk about
themselves, the info really sticks …
Application to Job Search
1. Know You:eTake time to know yourself!
- Feels Good: can be a coping tool – this isn’t just about the
destination, but trying to enjoy the journey as well
- Helpful When Networking: makes networking that
much more natural & perhaps enjoyable
2. Get to Know Others: It may help you
standout!
- Feels Good to Others: when you ask questions
about them – even something as simple as, “What’s
your favorite…?”
- Remember Something about Others: this will
definitely make you stand out! Keep it as a goal or
an objective, it will help you know you’ve been
successful while networking
3. Crux: We don’t often value this practice of
“Favorite Things” & so don’t set aside time
