The trigeminal nerve is the largest cranial nerve and contains both motor and sensory fibers. It has three main divisions - the ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular nerves. The ophthalmic division innervates the upper face and orbits, the maxillary division innervates the mid face, and the mandibular division innervates the lower face and contains both sensory and motor fibers that innervate the muscles of mastication. The trigeminal ganglion contains the cell bodies of the sensory fibers and is located in the trigeminal cave at the base of the skull.
