I. TRADITIONAL FOLK A N D ETHNIC DANCE
A. DEFINITION
1. Traditional folk dance
Considered a traditional dance or ethnic dance of a given country. It
relates to the customs, traditions, and daily lives of a certain
community or locality.
2. Ethnic Dance
The term ethnic emphasizes the cultural roots of the dance. In this
sense, nearly all folk dances are ethnic ones.
B. HISTORY
1. Traditional folk dance
Various tribes have a dance culture of their own. Resistance groups
fought the Spaniards and with this, many of our dances were
handed from one generation to the other. The Spanish colonizers
introduced European culture with the Jotas, Fandangos, and
Waltzes. Philippine folk dances have been included in the course
offerings in most of our schools.
2. Ethnic Dance
Ancient in origin but contemporaneous, ethnic dance lives on in
the
Philippines. Ethnic dances are found among the ethnolinguistic
groups scattered all over the Philippine islands.

II. M O D E R N A N D CONTEMPORARY DANCE
A. DEFINITION
1. Modern Dance
A highly expressive style of dance that challenges the
structured
dance technique of classical ballet. Modern dances are inspired by
other dance styles such as African dance, ballet, and folk dance.

2. Contemporary Dance
A style of interpretive dance that embraces innovation, blending
techniques from various genres, including classical ballet, jazz,
modern dance, and lyrical dance. It is characterized by freedom of
movement, letting dances explore the mind-body connection and
ideally evoking emotion in the audience.
B. HISTORY
1. Modern Dance
By the end of the nineteenth century, modern dance emerged as a
new performing art that rebelled against the tight structure of
traditional ballet. By the mid-twentieth century, modern dance
became a popular form of dance that would spawn other styles of
modern movement such as lyrical dance and contemporary dance.
2. Contemporary Dance
Contemporary dance developed in the twentieth century when US
dances Isadora Duncan broke away from ballet and developed her
own more natural style.

III. BALLROOM, RECREATIONAL A ND COMPETITIVE DANCE
A. DEFINITION
1. Ballroom Dance
Social dances and dance mixers are dances that aim for social
interaction. They are also called ballroom dances where male and
female dancers are paired or perform as a group. There are two
major classi 昀
椀 cations: Latin American dances and Modern
standard dances.
2. Recreational Dance
Recreational dance refers to any form of dancing that is done
primarily for its social, educational or health bene 昀
椀 ts. It
includes social dances.
3. Competitive Dance
A sport where dancers compete by performing dances in a
number
of permitted dances styles like tap, lyrical, jazz, acro, ballet,
hip=hip, contemporary, modern etc.
B. HISTORY
1. Ballroom Dance
The origins 昀
椀 rst appeared in 16t h
century when Europe
French
philosopher, Michel de Montaigne, wrote a dance he observed in
1580, where dancer moved together so closely that their faces
touched. Waltz, considered the oldest traditional ballroom dance,
originated as a dance style enjoyed by lower classes. As ballroom
dance entered cities, upper classes danced the minuets. Today,
ballroom dance is a phenomenon as a social activity, as well as a
competitive entity, delivering some of our country’s most talented
athletes as they blend elite execution of skill with a beautiful art
form.
2. Recreational Dance
The historical development of recreational social dance is a study
of
movement in time and space according to Haskell. The discovery
and colonization of America resulted in a fusing of many cultures
and ideas. It is natural that recreational social dances which
developed from this new society is distinctive and unique.
3. Competitive Dance
Dance turned into genuine sport at the beginning of twentieth
century, when French dancer and choreographer Camille de Ryhnal
and a group of dancers added competition to what had been purely
a social activity, when they converted ballrooms into venues for
their dance contests.

IV. CHEERDANCES
A. DEFINITION
Cheer dance, referred to as cheerleading, a team physical activity
using organized routines for the purpose of motivating a sports team,
entertaining an audience, or participating in a competition.
B. HISTORY
Cheerleading is over 100 years old that started when all cheerleaders
were men. The 昀
椀 rst cheerleaders in the US were organized by
Princeton graduate named Thomas Peebles. He moved to Minnesota
and there he formed an organization of cheerleaders. Women joined
cheerleading squads in 1923. The National Cheerleader Association
was founded by Lawrence Herkimer in 1948.

V. HIP-HOP A N D STREETDANCING
A. DEFINITION
1. Hip-Hop Dance
Hip-hop dances are street dance styles performed with hip-hop
music that evolved from the hip-hop culture. These dances are
practiced in dance studios and outdoor spaces often in freestyle or
improvisational. Crews often join competitions called “battles.”
2. Street Dance
A dance style that evolved outside dance studios in any available
open space such as streets, dance parties, block parties, parks,
school yards, and nightclubs. It is dance form, reacting against
traditional, high-art dance styles.
B. HISTORY
1. Hip-hop Dance
A subculture and an art movement that refers exclusively to
hip=hop musical so-called “rap.” It is characterized by anywhere
from four to nine distinct elements or expressive realms of which
hip-hop music is only one element.
2. Street Dance
These were created in the 1970’s and made popular by dance crews
in the United States. Street dance evolved out of the hip-hop scene
in the early eighties, when rival groups of New York youth
choreographed their own break dance and performed them in the
streets.

VI. FESTIVAL DANCES
A. DEFINITION
Fiestas are part of Filipino culture, and these occasions are opportunity
to celebrate. Fiestas before show animalistic, rituals, merrymaking,
and thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest, marriage, or birth of a child.

d into religious and nonreligious or
secular.
B. HISTORY
Fiestas already existed prior to Spanish colonialization. Upon
colonization, Spanish religious practices in 昀
氀 uenced us, and
some 昀
椀 estas became celebration in honor of patron saints
and/or major events of the lives of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary.
Today, each
province of the country has at least on festival of its own and has been
constantly fascinating to guests and tourists.

VII. FOREIGN DANCES
A. DEFINITION
Foreign dances are dances that originates from countries other than
the Philippines. These dances represent their originating country/area’s
culture and is other passed down from previous generations.
B. HISTORY
Foreign dances developed in the colonist community of the United
States of America during the 昀
椀 rst half of the 20t h
century. Ethnic
dances have been done internationally for hundreds of years. It has
grown into a huge community of dancers, performing grouping and
recreational folk dance all through the US, Europe, Canada, Japan,
Australia, and other countries.
