What if I told you that
militants are taking over
our bodies?

What if I told you that militants are
taking over our bodies and making
us vulnerable humans? That they are
attacking us from inside and rendering us sick; so sick that
at times we may need dire medical support or even die. I am
sure most of you would say that we have to overpower the
militants before they kill us. Well, these so called militants
have already taken over 35% of the state and are encroaching
on the rest and are extremely silent and surreptitious in their
behaviour.Yes, you guessed right! The militant in this case is
none other than the dreaded disorder Diabetes.
Recently, we took a pledge to fight diabetes and the entire
school raised slogans and waved placards to drive the point
in. Flyers were distributed, mails were sent, plays were staged
and videos were shown. But has the outcome sufficed the
purpose of the battle? In this war against diabetes, what are
the steps that you have taken personally to reduce or ward
off its occurrence? Have you reduced your intake of sugar and
junk food? Are you exercising on a regular basis? And most
importantly are you in charge of your stress levels? If you have
answered ‘yes’ to these three questions, then you are a part of
the army fighting against diabetes!
In this edition of Udgam Matters you will find information
of diabetes alongwith myths debunked, heart-touching
articles by our writers, and plenty of other features that
will enthrall you.

Do you think other children have more
legible writing than you? Poor handwriting
can be embarrassing and significantly affect
your academic and professional life. Rather
than allowing your handwriting to continue
to worsen, make changes to beautify your
written words.
Let’s find out the reasons for illegible hand
writing:
Problems in Hand-Writing:
The main problems hindering good
handwriting occur when children,
1) Hold the pen in an awkward manner.
2) Find it difficult to read and understand
what is written.
3) Handwriting is not legible.
4) Write sometimes better but not
consistent.
5) Hold the pen or pencil almost near the tip.
6) Cannot write fast and the notes are
incomplete.
7) Gettheremarkfromtheteacher“Improve
your Handwriting”.
8) Cannot differentiate between the
alphabet ‘b’ and ‘d’ and get confused
with them.
9) Do not join all the alphabets.
11) Very slow in Writing and press the pencil
or pen heavily.
12) While writing numbers, cannot
differentiate some of the numbers.
13) Do not write sentences on the lines and it
goes up and down.
14) Do not write small alphabets and use only
Capital Letters.
15) Have inconsistent slant and the writing
goes left, straight and right as well.
16) Keep changing different pencils / pens.
17) Fingers / hand become shaky while
writing.
18) Aregoodatansweringorallythanwritten.
19)Are very shy natured and do not complain
about any problems.
20) Always feel interested to do outdoor
activities and do not concentrate in
writing or reading academic books.
21) Write very small and cannot read them
clearly.
22) Use Computer Systems normally and do
not get chance to write. Hence, cannot
write confidently.
Solutions:
1) Buy a handwriting course book.
2) Use double line/ four line papers/books.
3) Review your letters.
4) Check the height of your letters.
5) Check spacing between words.
6) Copy handwriting you like.
7) Hold your pen/pencil correctly.
8) Position your paper/book correctly.
9) Stay in the “writing zone”.
10) Try graph paper.
11) Don’t press pen/pencil too hard on paper.
12) Move your whole hand and wrist for
capital letters, your fingers just for lower
case letters.
13) Don’t write too fast.
14) Practise 20 minutes every day.
15) Check you posture.

For today’s tech savvy parents the
term quality time is very commonly
used. Quality time in simple words
mean ‘being there’. We generally
catch up with children/family on
weekends by getting up early, taking
kids for a movie, buying baskets of
popcorn followed by a fancy dinner.
Return home exhausted get up late
on Sundays and then get carried
away in daily chores. This is a so
called a societal way of spending a
weekend
I really do not know how much
time we have spent interacting
with each other. Most time is
spent in monologues where we are
only preaching. We can try some
variations by showing we are there
for our children; we too enjoy their
company. We often complain that
kids are busy on iPads, TV, mobile.
We have without trying accepted
that nothing interests our kids other
than electronic gadgets.
While they are watching Television,
open a box of Pictionary,Crossword,
or even Plot 4 invite them and they
would happily engage themselves.
You would be surprised to see this
reaction of theirs, as human we all
need family interaction. Children
miss interaction. They are too small
to realise how lonely they are in this
tech world.As a result, happiness for
them limits in buying such expensive
gadgets.
Try getting involved with kids
without aiming at always teaching
them something. Rather a family
interaction could lead to a great
deal of learning without much
methodology involved. This teaches
them interpersonal skills, gives
them the sensibility of prioritizing
their life and thus improvising
communication skills.
So inspire them, inculcate the family
values and spend quality time

my first exam
I was very excited for my first exams. I
wondered what would happen ?
I had to study a lot - no storybooks, no
i-Pad and very less ofT.V. I did not go to
the restaurant for one whole week !!!
The day of the exam, I happily went to
school. It was the Hindi paper. I felt it
was very easy.The time just flew by. I
discussed the paper with my mother
and discovered that I had made two
mistakes in the paper. My mother told
me such things do happen.
Soon, the exam week got over and
it was celebration time !!! In the
weekend I had so much fun
with my friends.
Result time !!
I realised that if we study well, our
result will automatically be A-1 .We
should work hard sincerely.We should
not be afraid of exams, but rather
enjoy them. And remember, if you get
very less grades, don’t be sad just, try
to improve the mistakes !!

about my first statement. Not only they, we

like me haven’t. We have to do just that and
we’ll be twinkling and shining in no time! I
salute the people who had the courage to go
and look for it. Kalpana Chawla had always
believed in “The path from your dreams to

find it, courage to get on it and perseverance
to follow it.” People have different talents.
Some are speaking stars. Their speech can
hurt someone and can also make them smile.
These are the star leaders.
Some are stars at being compassionate.They
can listen to anyone compassionately and
understand other’s feelings. These are star
psychologists and counsellors.
Sometimes, people have the star ability to
make new stars. These are the superstar
teachers.
I respect all the stars. Sometimes, they are
often underestimated. But we should always
recognize them and honour them. These
super people are required for the world’s
progress. As the line goes “Kho najaye ye,
taarezameen par.”

Saluting Heroes of
our Nation
On entering the venue of ‘Know your
Army’, I first saw a Grenade Launcher. I
was so glad for the chance I got to hold
the weapon. Just thereafter, I spotted
the most talked about Rifle in today’s
counter-terrorism operations, the AK—
47.
The exhibition had several army
equipment, such as missile launcher,
heavy machine guns, snipers, radars of
various ranges, communication devices,
tents, exhibits etc.
There is more to the Indian Army than
the excitement through adventure and
the chivalry of using arms.
I got to learn a lot about day to day use
of science in the life of a soldier. A javan
often travels to unknown places while
on the battlefield and when he gets lost,
he first needs to find the direction.When
gadgets like magnets are not available,
a javan use a shaving razor blade! If we
keep the blade in water, one side always
points to the south and the other to the
north due to magnetic property. We
know that the sun rises from the east.
When the sun rays fall on trees, the side
of the tree on which it falls will have riper
fruits and the leaves of that side become
yellow and fall faster than the other side.
As a tribute to the brave hearts of the
Indian Army, I sang the song “Saare
Jahaan Se Accha”, along with the army
band. I wrote a slogan for the Indian
army for the slogan writing competition.

comprehended the depth behind this
simple phrase. Man is but a product of his
actions. Over the course of the past few
months I have embarked on a journey of
introspection. I have now accepted that
I am not perfect; I am extraordinarily
flawed. It’s because I’m only human,
as we all are. I am just trying to find my
place in this world.
Being in high school is not an easy task; it
comes with a lot of baggage. There have
been times when I have given in to peer
pressure, cried over an unexpected bad
grade, thought I could never rise above
my contemporaries. Back then all of this
seemed like some kind of a huge deal. It
is only now that I have realised, all those
things are not going to matter ten years
on anyway. I am yet trying to change my
outlook towards things- choosing to look
towards the brighter side.
Ihaverealisedthatachievingperfectionis
nothing but a myth.Someone else’s grass
is always going to be greener and that is
okay. I have my whole life in front of me
with a soul that will never stop dreaming.
Ihavesomanythingstotickoffmybucket
list and so many memories to make. The
world is mine to conquer. People will
always have advice to offer, but when it
comes down to the final choice, it is going
to be mine. My life will not be dictated by
someone else’s whims.
And as I move further along the path
of life, take a foray into the unknown, I
know it is only going to get tough, I have
decided to take every defeat in my stride
and not let success get the best of me.
It is only wise to hustle hard and stay
humble. I believe that good things come
to those who wait but great things come
to those who go out and take. I know
that there will come a certain point in my
life when I will reflect back on this whole
journey. And in that moment when it
feels like time is suspended and reality
will slip outside of its bounds, I want to
experience a sense of gratitude that my
life is filled with joy, a joy that is beyond
anything that I could have possibly
earned. There is nothing more I want
than to be thankful for. Ideas and causes
that embraced me and that I embraced
back and most importantly for the life
that I built for myself.

FOR WHO I AM
Dance is a series
of movements and
steps that are usually
performed to music. This is what the
dictionary says but on the contrary I say
that dance is not just a physical activity
but it is a casket of morals, values and
discipline. Dance came into me in merely
7 years of age. I still remember my first
day of my Bharatnatyam classes when
my KalaGuru taught me how to pay
homage to the mother earth by doing
a ‘Namaskaar.’ That was the day and
today is the day when dance has given
me altogether a new vision to view life.
Learning Bharatnatyam has given me
immense knowledge about the rich
and deeply rooted heritage and culture
of India. It has taught me that how
each and every body part has a rhythm
within it and it is just upon us as to how
to bring it out and utilize it at the right
place.Apart from all this going to classes
meeting new classmates, attending
workshops, going to watch some dance
programmes, all of it has just added to
my knowledge and has increased the
importance of socializing in one’s life.
An art can bring out all the potentiality
within you onto the right track, what
more is required? I have learned in this
journey of my dance that whenever one
scolds, it is just for our benefit. I clearly
remember that how while practicing
when I used to become lazy at times and
just stand up, my teacher used to scold
me a lot. I always used to feel bad about
it and never realised its importance but
on the day of my Arangetram she stated
that “You have performed much much
better than I had expected.” Those
words of her are unforgetful.
During the days of my Arangetram
practice when I used to practise for 4
hours a day, it became a tough task to
manage school and classes together.
But dedicated efforts never go in vain
and the result of all those efforts was
amusable. It came to me in the form of
shear appreciation and respect. And all
this was possible because of my passion
for dance.
Discipline, hardwork, determination
and self- confidence, all have come to
me from dance. All these qualities have
helped me as a student too.Truly, dance
has entirely changed my perception to
view the ever beautiful life......

Nowadays what has happened to the
climate here. Sometimes it’s extremely
hot or sometimes it is extremely cold.
The situation here is as if we are passing
through some trials of climate in order
to live peacefully. But the condition is
worst not only here but all around the
world. I mean to say that this situation
is a ‘GLOBAL WARNING’ what we call
‘GLOBAL WARMING ‘. Melting of polar
ice caps in Antartica , Depletion of
ozone layer, ecological imbalance are
all symptoms or indications of global
warming. These all situations increase
the temperature of Earth. Now don’t
start blaming the governments of
different countries as they are not
taking proper care of the natural
resources. Actually to say but we are
only responsible for this stuff. We use
our resources in such a way that our
needs are being fulfilled but there is
nothing left for the natural organisms
or even for the future generation. From
this situation I remember one quote of
Mahatma Gandhi where he says that”
Resources are for everybody’s need, not
for somebody’s greed.” Dear readers,
don’tdependuponorganizationslikeUN
to call members of different countries
and plan something to prevent global
warming. UN has implemented plans
and schemes to prevent global warming
which is rarely followed by any country.
As we say every problem has a solution
so here are some basic steps to prevent
global warming.Firstly follow 3r’s i.e.
reduce, reuse and recycle. Secondly
practice sustainable management of
resources to prevent depletion of both
resources and environment. Last but
not the least practice afforestation in
your locality to prevent pollution. So
let’s take an oath to follow these basic
steps to protect our Earth from GLOBAL
WARNING i.e. GLOBALWARMING!

It’s important to educate yourself
aboutdiabetessoyoucanhelpyour
child manage it.This means arming
yourself with the right information.
Myth: Eating too much sugar
causes diabetes.
Fact:Type 1 diabetes is caused by a
destructionoftheinsulin-producing
cells of the pancreas, which is
unrelated to sugar consumption.
Although the tendency to get type
2diabetesisgeneticallyinheritedin
most cases, eating too much sugar
can cause weight gain, which can
increase the risk for developing the
disease.
Myth: Kids with diabetes can never
eat sweets.
Fact: Kids with diabetes can eat a
certain amount of sugary food as
part of a balanced diet, but they
need to control the total amount
of carbohydrates they eat, which
includes sugary treats.
Myth: Kids can outgrow diabetes.
Fact: Kids do not outgrow diabetes.
Kidswithtype1diabeteswillalways
need to take insulin. Although kids
with type 2 diabetes may see an
improvement in their blood sugar
levels after puberty or with lifestyle
adjustments, they will probably
always have a tendency toward
having high blood sugar levels.
Myth: Diabetes is contagious.
Fact: Diabetes is not contagious.
You can’t catch it from another
person.
Myth: High blood sugar levels are
normal for some people and aren’t
a sign of diabetes.
Fact: Certain conditions (like illness
or stress) and certain medications
(likesteroids)temporarilycancause
high blood sugar levels in people
without diabetes. But high blood
sugar levels are never normal.
Myth: People with diabetes can feel
whether their blood sugar levels
are high or low.
Fact: Although someone with
diabetes may feel physical
symptoms (such as extreme thirst,
weakness, or fatigue) if blood sugar
levels are high or low, the only way
to know for sure what the levels are
is to test them.
Myth: All people with diabetes
need to take insulin.
Fact:Allpeoplewithtype1diabetes
have to take insulin injections
because their pancreases don’t
make insulin anymore. Some, but
not all, people with type 2 diabetes
have to take insulin with or without
pills to manage their blood sugar
levels.
Myth: Kids with diabetes can’t
exercise.
Fact: Exercise is important for all
kids — with or without diabetes!
Exercise offers many benefits to
kids with diabetes. It helps them
manage their weight and prevents
them from gaining excess body
fat. It also improves cardiovascular
health, boosts mood, relieves
stress, and helps blood sugar
control.
Myth: Low-carbohydrate diets are
goodforkidswithdiabetesbecause
they should avoid carbs.
Fact: Carbohydrates carbs are the
body’s preferred source of energy,
and carbohydrate-containing foods
shouldprovideabout50%to60%of
a person’s calories each day. Low-
carb diets tend to be overloaded
with protein and fat. Following a
high-fat, high-protein diet over
the long term may increase the
risks of heart and kidney disease in
adulthood.
It’s important to educate yourself about diabetes so you can help your child manage it.
This means arming yourself with the right information.

November our school
celebrated World
Diabetes Day along with
Children’s Day.The connection
between the two days may
seem to be a coincidence but
for us it is not. We feel that
when it comes to warding
off this disorder which has
affected 35% population of
Gujarat and is highly prevalent
in children too, we should
leave no stone unturned.
LET US FIGHT DIABETES AND
KEEP IT AT BAY
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease that
affects how the body uses
glucose,themaintypeofsugar
in the blood. Glucose, which
comes from the foods we eat,
is the major source of energy
needed to fuel the body’s
functions. To use glucose,
the body needs the hormone
insulin. But in people with
diabetes, the body either can’t
make insulin or the insulin
doesn’t work in the body like it
should.
The two major types of
diabetes are:
1. Type 1 diabetes, in which
the immune system attacks

battle begins between the
Kranks and their neighbours.
Then Blair calls and tells her
parents that she is flying
home for Christmas with her
fiancée. They have twenty-
four hours to put up all the
decorations and prepare for
the Christmas party. The
movie is very humourous
and perfectly tells us why we
cannot skip Christmas!
