6 elements of communication
computer system
• Human being
• Hardware
• Software
• Data / information
• Procedure
• Communication
What is hardware?
• Hardware is best described as a device that
is physically connected to your computer or
something that can be physically touched. A
CD-ROM, monitor, and printer are all
examples of computer hardware.
• Without any hardware your computer would
not exist and software would have nothing to
run on.
5 main function of hardware
• Input
• Processing
• Output
• Storage
• Communication
TYPES OF HARDWARE
INPUT
OUTPUT
Input Device
• Input device is a tool to interpret the
symbol that understand by human being
to the symbol that computer understand
to process.
• Device for entering information into a
computer.
INPUT DEVICE

Data will
be input
into the
computer
using the
keyboard

Direct Entry Device
– This device is to create data that can
be read by machine and direct enter to
the CPU.
– Direct entry device is divide to
• pointing,
• scanner and
• voice input device
Direct entry device
– Pointing Devices
• Mouse
• Trackball
• Touch screen
• Digital camera
Direct entry device
• Example:
– Digitizer

Direct entry device
• Scanner Devices
– Scan text, image, drawing or special symbol
– Images are recorded in digital form.
Scanner
• Image scanner
• Bar code reader
• Fax machine
• Character recognition
Voice Input Device
• This device is change the human voice into
digital code.
• Example :
– microphone
OUTPUT DEVICE
• Output device is a tool to interpret the
code that understand by computer to the
symbol or language that understand by
human being.
• Device for appearing an information from
computer.
Output Device
• Output Devices are divided by 4 :
–Monitor
–Printer
–Plotter
–Voice output device
Types of monitor
CRT – cathode ray tube LCD – Liquid crystal display monitor
Printer
• Printer is a tools for transferring information
onto paper, that is truly external to the other
functions of the computer.
Printer
• 4 types of printer :
– Ink jet
– Dote matrix
– Thermal
– Laser jet
Plotter
• Plotter is a special device to
create chart, map, 3D
illustration and architectural
drawing
• Plotter is divide by 4 :
– Pen plotter
– Electrostatic plotter
– Ink jet plotter
– Direct image plotter
