Industry Car Rental
Founded 1957
Founder Jack Taylor
Headquarters Clayton, Missouri, United
States

3
About Enterprise…
It all started with seven cars and a hunch
 One man’s vision is how the Enterprise story begins. Back in 1957, a
decorated WWII Hellcat pilot returned home after serving over the skies
of the South Pacific. This man, a true innovator named Jack Taylor, had a
steadfast dedication to his country, his family and the dream of starting a
business.
 Utilizing lessons learned in the Navy—including the value of hard work,
team spirit and simply doing the right thing—Jack embraced the novel
concept of leasing automobiles, with a fleet of seven cars.
4
Enterprise’s business objectives
‘Take care of your customers and employees first and
profits will follow.’
Jack Taylor
The four objectives
 customer satisfaction
 fleet growth
 employee development
 profitability.
5
Leadership & Management
Leadership
 Leadership is directing and inspiring
people to achieve the goals of the
organization.
 A leader influences others in
meetings or when making decisions.
Management
 Management involves control and
organization to get something done.
Managers…..
 plan and organize people and
resources
 set and monitor budgets
 control operations or services
6
Management Styles
 Management styles are patterns of
behavior adopted when carrying out a
leadership role, like making decisions.
 These styles influence how leaders
communicate with employees.
 These are…
 Autocratic
 Democratic
 Laissez-faire
7
Autocratic Style
 An autocratic style of leadership is a
leader makes a decision alone.
 The leader conveys the decision to
staff and they have to work within the
scope of that decision.
 Subordinates knows only What and
How to do.
8
Autocratic Style Suits
An autocratic style can be referred to meet any unconditional need of an
organization.
For example
 To ensure the core value(s) or objective(s) of an organization are met.
 To meet legal requirements.
 To confirm Health and Safety issues.
 To control a rattle among subordinates.
9
Democratic Style
 In democratic style of decision making, everyone
has the opportunity to contribute ideas to the
decision.
There are two types of democratic decision-making:
1. persuasive democratic management – here the
leader makes the decision first and then
persuades employees that he or she has made
the right decision
2. consultative democratic management – this
involves the group contributing to the decision
making process, with the leader making the final
decision.
10
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need11
Democratic style as a motivator
 Enables employees to have ownership.
 improves their sense of worth and self esteem.
 helps them to use creative skills & motivate to perform
better.
12
Laissez-faire
 Derived from the French meaning ‘leave alone’.
 Employees carry out activities freely within broad
limits.
 Individuals are able to behave independently and
make their own decisions, rather than coming
together on an agreed course of action.
