Cinematic Techniques How representation is affected Camerawork Gun shown in CU for the first few times, boy’s face in MCU looks serious and uncomfortable. Cuts between MCU of boy and MS of all three in the car. High angle as she goes upstairs and gets closer=she is not the powerful person her parents at the bottom think she is. CU zooms and tilts to MS in car=emphasis on the package CU of the man’s face shows that he is in control and suspicious of the other man. Camera’s quite shaky when the girl’s in her room=uncertainty. Low angle as the parents break through the door=they finally have the power over the daughter/the power they had all the time. Lighting Exterior shots look like natural lighting, but it’s at night=darkness=danger=not sure what is going to happen. Interior looks quite warm (in the house), use of lamps=loving family home Girl’s bedroom= looks similar t o the rest of the house at times, seems quite dark at her CUs=her inner depression As a whole it looks quite realistic, not typical bright lighting everywhere like normal films. Mise-en-scene Setting = streets, good car, house, bedroom=average/realistic/believable. Body language=quite stiff/uncomfortable in the car and in the girl’s bedroom, parents are free and easy=comfort, boys in the bedroom are open and free (hand movements, throwing selves ion the bed). Editing Fast cuts when the girl’s in her room (kind of jumps)=she’s a bit crazy/unhinged/confused. Cross cuts between six people=all linked and feeling the same way/oblivious to the other people’s problems. Enforced by the sliding transitions it sometimes looks like a split screen. Dips to black after the girl’s death. Sound Opening music=low percussion=tension. Dialogue=emphasis on different accents (goes from Jamaican to inner city to middle class. Two men in the car=high percussion=audience know something bad is going to happen. Music (begins diegetic and changes no non)= “when the blues unfold it gets cold” “when you most need to get up you’ve got no energy” “you were born alone and you will die alone” “just trying to stay positive” =life is tough for inner city teenagers=like the tough person they try to put forward is just a cover. Can’t be seen as their true emotional selves.
