As cargo ships increase in size, engineers are developing new ways to expand ports, including dredging. About 42 percent of the work on the massive new locks has been completed, and it’s by far the most costly and complicated part of the $5.25 billion project to retrofit the nearly century-old canal with larger locks to lift and lower ships. The length of three football fields, such vessels are too long, too heavy and too wide to fit through the existing locks. On the US East Coast alone, ports from Boston and New York to Baltimore and Miami are in the midst of multi-billion dollar projects to deepen ports and docks to handle the much larger ships.
